Just your average Kiwi kid, having some pretty ext Just your average Kiwi kid, having some pretty extraordinary experiences 🇳🇿 Alice’s first time riding a pony... at the Yila Grasslands at Napa Lake in Shangri-La, Yunnan province, China 🐴 - These horses have a pretty incredible history in this area. Here’s some info I read on chinahighlights if anyone’s interested... The Ancient Tea Horse Road (in China) was a trade route mainly through Yunnan, Sichuan, and Tibet. From the 6th century to the 20th century, people in Sichuan and Yunnan provinces traveled by foot and horseback with pack horses to exchange tea for horses with people in Tibet - and thus the pathway was called the Tea Horse Road. The Ancient Tea Horse Road was one of the highest and most precipitous ancient roads in the world, which has carried and spread civilization and culture for centuries. The Ancient Tea Horse Road rivaled the Silk Road trade routes for importance, and as the longest ancient trade road in the world, at more than 10,000 kilometers in length, but was certainly toughest to travel. The Tea Horse Road linked Sichuan, Yunnan, and Tibet, stretched across Bhutan, Sikkim, Nepal, and India, and then reached the Middle East, and even the Red Sea coast of Egypt.

“Collect moments, not things.” I have this quo “Collect moments, not things.” I have this quote sitting on my desk on a beautiful wooden plaque that my late husband and I picked up on one of our trips to Key West. It is such a great reminder to make moments. . Since the new moon last week, I’ve felt some shifts…creative energy shifts. It reminded me I am in control of my life. I can turn dreams into realities. So I started thinking about what I wanted for the remainder of this year. I mean, its been a crap shoot of a year so far, am I right? I wanted to be specific about my intentions and make them really freaking awesome. . I decided I wanted to adventure more. I love camping, being outside, hiking, watching the sunset, sitting my a fire, waking up and having a cup of hot coffee outside. I try to incorporate all of this in our lives at home, but some times you just need a chance of scenery. . I’ve started researching bigger cars, ones that can tow a small trailer. Trailer with a bathroom, heat and air conditioning are a must. I know, I’m more of a glamper than a camper, but if mama ain’t happy ain’t nobody happy. lol. I own it. I’m ok with that. 😉 . So as I plan out our fall and maybe even winter activities, I’m curious to know where are your favorite places to visit? Northeast, down south, out west, doesn’t matter..What we don’t get to this fall, we’ll plan for next year. I’m thinking a National Park trip in the next year or so..🏕 . So take a second to daydream or reminisce. Where would you go if you could go anywhere in the states or Canada. Lakeside? Beaches? Mountains? One thing you should know about our family is that One thing you should know about our family is that we are HUGE UNC fans! Mike went to graduate school there and I commuted to Chapel Hill just about every weekend for two years from my consulting job. You can’t spend any time in Chapel HIll and not become a devoted basketball fan! 🏀And naturally, we have raised our kids to bleed Carolina blue: they’ve always worn the gear, watched all the basketball games, fly the flag on game day, and have made multiple trips across the country to visit the campus. In 2016, we decided to follow the team to Maui for the Maui Invitational. 🌺🌴The tournament is held over Thanksgiving week every year in Lahaina, but UNC attends only every 4th year. That year, UNC won the entire tournament and we were there for every game! It was an amazing way to kick off the college basketball season. We decided from that point on, we would spend every 4th Thanksgiving on Maui cheering for the Tar Heels. 2020 is the year we were supposed to go back to Maui. The tournament wasn’t canceled, but it was moved to Asheville, NC and we decided not to go. It’s a bummer to miss out this year, but we’ll be cheering them on from home with our flag flying proud. Go Heels! Maui 2024!🌈

It was a perfect evening. # Wendy was only awake for the entree. Since the restaurant was half empty, she was able to sleep next to Tiernan and me on a bench seat. Then we enjoyed a leisurely drink and dessert on this amazing rooftop with friends. No one had to sacrifice their night to sit in the room with the baby (hotel baby sitters aren’t for us). # I remember being so worried she wasn’t warm enough, but really she did not need this jumper in March in Córdoba 😅Basically the epitome of a first time parent...

Hands up if you love a model village 🙋🏼‍♀️? I don’t know what it is about them but I find them so charming and they transport you into such an idyllic way of living. bekonscotofficial certainly stole one of the top spots of a local (ish) day out for us. You could easily spend a couple of hours there wandering through the different scenes and spotting the meticulous attention to detail and a ride on the miniature train is an absolute must 🚂. He received an amazing school report which not only praised his accelerated academic progress this year but more importantly to us, celebrated his increase in resilience and confidence. He then turned 9 and was able to celebrate with his fab group of friends. And to top it off, within half an hour of finishing the school year, we’d packed the car up and driven six hours down to Cornwall! We’ve had a slow start to the holiday exploring our local beach and the nearest town. Unfortunately I’m not feeling 100% which is a rubbish way to start our holiday but I’m keeping everything crossed that after a good night’s sleep, I’ll be firing on all cylinders for a fun day out tomorrow. I cried after taking this picture. ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ T I cried after taking this picture. ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ The lockdown in Germany from November, 2020 through May, 2021, was so hard. And while we made the best of it, we still missed out on so much. ⁠⁠ The urge to pack up a bag and stay somewhere—anywhere—had me jumping out of my skin. ⁠⁠ So the second we could, we got the heck out of town for a quick overnight stay just north of us in Münster, Germany.⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ It was just me and the kids—coincidentally, the day the restrictions lifted, my husband went away to do military stuff. ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ Our trip wasn't somewhere super exciting, and we didn't have any hard plans. We met up with some (new to us friends), walked around a new city, stayed at a really cool Airbnb, and the kids had the best time. ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ I cried after this picture, because as I was taking it, the AirBnb owner poured me a glass of wine and started chatting with me like I was her oldest friend. The kids were having the time of their lives playing, and I remember exhaling those long seven months and finally relaxing a little bit. ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ After so many days of mundane isolation, it was incredibly emotional to feel free again.⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ I'm sharing more about our short trip to Münster (including this amazing AirBnb that we stayed at) on the blog. Let's talk ride height because this can make or br Let's talk ride height because this can make or break a vacation!⁠ ⁠ At Universal I recommend being 42 inches to visit. This does not mean that kids under 42 can't visit or have nothing to do but a lot of the main attractions have a 42 inch or taller ride height.⁠ ⁠ Our youngest is almost tall enough for all the attractions. He has a little ways to go for Hulk, maybe on our next visit! (54 in.) I actually can't believe he was tall enough for Velocicoaster but he loved it! (51 in.)⁠ ⁠ If your child is not tall enough to ride but other people in your group want to ride Universal has a great child swap program. ⁠ ⁠ 👩‍👧One adult stays with the child not riding while the others ride and then you switch. We have used this a lot and I really like this option. ⁠ ⁠ 🎢My biggest tip is to take a look at the rides and attractions before you book your trip. Look for two things:⁠ 1-height requirements⁠ 2- scare factors or interest⁠ ⁠ I have an entire post on the blog about ride expectations. "How did the kids do in Normandy?" That's been the "How did the kids do in Normandy?" That's been the number one question y'all have asked about our trip to see the D-Day sites.⁠ ⁠ Here's my answer: They did surprisingly well. ⁠ ⁠ My kids (8, 6, and 4 years old) are pretty well-behaved most of the time, but they're still kids, and we were seeing some very "heavy" sites: cemeteries, memorials, war museums, etc., so our expectations were a little higher than usual. ⁠ ⁠ I wrote a blog post where I dive into these (and more) deeper (link in bio; look for this picture), but here are some quick tips to keep in mind: ⁠ ⁠ ⫸⫸Don’t Overdo It. ⁠ There is A LOT to see, and it can overwhelming. Keep them in mind when planning your day. ⁠ ⁠ ⫸⫸Bribe the Heck Out of Them. ⁠ We weren't above promising them 🍦or 🧇, and water time (pool and/or 🏖 ) in the afternoons if they behaved at the D-Day sites in the morning.⁠ ⁠ ⫸⫸Check the Tides. ⁠ There's nothing worse than going to see D-Day sites at the beach...and having no beach because of high tide. Low tide is best, so check them before you venture out! ⁠ ⫸⫸Pack a Picnic. ⁠ Don't 100% rely on local places for lunch—several places were closed or open later than stated. At the very least pick up some 🥖🥐 at the bakery to have on standby for hangry little humans. ⁠ ⁠ ⫸⫸Get Your Learn on Before You Go. ⁠ Educate them about what they're going to see and experience. You don't have to go into gory detail, but share some simple facts. Into the top 5 of my daughter's top 10 destination Into the top 5 of my daughter's top 10 destinations visited and it's wonderful Oman - we spent a week here a few years ago, although we packed it full and were both won over by the country. The highlight for us both? The desert. 🐪 'I remember climbing up gigantic sand dunes to see the most amazing sunset ever (the long climb was worth it)' according to m 8yo. Which is pretty much my memory too. That and the silence, the dunes stretching off in every direction and endless, countless shades of gold, orange, burned, molten caramel. 🐪 It was tough to pick one highlight, given that we saw dolphins in the sea off Muscat, watched a turtle laying eggs in the night and a baby hatching, soaked up the views across a canyon and discovered an oasis in the dry stony mountains. Just to name a few... 🧡🧡🧡

Back in October when the illusion was life would be more normal, I did a flurry of Christmas activity bookings to the point where I actually forgot about this one 🙉! It was only when I was searching through my inbox for something else, I remembered I’d booked it 🤦🏼‍♀️. Given that 2021 has started off even bumpier than anticipated and is probably set to get even more unsettled, it was a great tonic to lift all our spirits. Of all the places we have been, I am the most sad Of all the places we have been, I am the most sad to leave here. This town of Cortina d’Ampezzo in the Dolomites region is pure happiness. The mountains (the Italian Alps) are the most majestic we have ever seen and the crystal blue lakes are like glass. The town itself is described the crown jewel of the Dolomites and gives me cozy Aspen vibes with all the European charm. It has been refreshing to have cooler temperatures after the heat waves we had in other parts of Italy. The weather feels like fall but the town seems to create the holiday feeling year round. Our family is in LOVE ❤️

It was amazing for her to see us on the receiving end of abundant honesty and good will. As I mentioned, when we arrived to Panama City Panama I realized my wallet was gone. We searched high and low, and thought it fell out in the customs conveyor belt. We knew there was a chance it could have fallen out in the cab, but less likely, plus we paid in cash and didn’t have the name of the cab company to reach out. The next morning I received a call that my taxi driver was waiting downstairs and had my wallet. He obviously knew where he dropped us off, and waited 40 mins downstairs (they had to contact our host and then me) until he could personally hand deliver it to me. I was floored by his kindness, he had nothing to gain by returning my wallet. Yes, it is the right thing to do, but he could have just as easily turned it into his company and let me worry about it instead of going on a wild goose chase to get it back to me! It was so kind and reminded me that there are truly selfless people, kind, good hearted people out there! ❤️❤️❤️ PS: ironic side note- yesterday we got in a Uber and hidden in the side door I found another passengers wallet and made sure the Uber driver had it to return to them! 1-what goes around comes around! 2-we all need to do a better job taking care of our sh*t! 🤪
