The last year and a half has changed so many of us The last year and a half has changed so many of us. For us, it redefined the essence of our lifestyle. It forced us to settle down somewhere, and roots started to grow where we would never have dreamed to live. Two of our daughters have expressed a need for stability, and with the current border situation, we have no plans of leaving for now. We’ll be at the campground again on our beautiful campsite. The twins will soon be filling their university applications and JF and I are starting to talk about what our life might look like “after”… It’s a bit strange and it’s OK. I don’t think it’s the end for the Red Bus, but it is likely the end of the family life on the road. And that is bittersweet, but I like to think that we have more adventures in store together. On the road or otherwise.

I didn’t quite envision running to Delicate arch at sunrise at the start of the trail, but Ava was determined to beat Daddy and Ella to the top, so run we did for at least a bit. I cried after taking this picture. ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ T I cried after taking this picture. ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ The lockdown in Germany from November, 2020 through May, 2021, was so hard. And while we made the best of it, we still missed out on so much. ⁠⁠ The urge to pack up a bag and stay somewhere—anywhere—had me jumping out of my skin. ⁠⁠ So the second we could, we got the heck out of town for a quick overnight stay just north of us in Münster, Germany.⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ It was just me and the kids—coincidentally, the day the restrictions lifted, my husband went away to do military stuff. ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ Our trip wasn't somewhere super exciting, and we didn't have any hard plans. We met up with some (new to us friends), walked around a new city, stayed at a really cool Airbnb, and the kids had the best time. ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ I cried after this picture, because as I was taking it, the AirBnb owner poured me a glass of wine and started chatting with me like I was her oldest friend. The kids were having the time of their lives playing, and I remember exhaling those long seven months and finally relaxing a little bit. ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ After so many days of mundane isolation, it was incredibly emotional to feel free again.⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ I'm sharing more about our short trip to Münster (including this amazing AirBnb that we stayed at) on the blog. "How did the kids do in Normandy?" That's been the "How did the kids do in Normandy?" That's been the number one question y'all have asked about our trip to see the D-Day sites.⁠ ⁠ Here's my answer: They did surprisingly well. ⁠ ⁠ My kids (8, 6, and 4 years old) are pretty well-behaved most of the time, but they're still kids, and we were seeing some very "heavy" sites: cemeteries, memorials, war museums, etc., so our expectations were a little higher than usual. ⁠ ⁠ I wrote a blog post where I dive into these (and more) deeper (link in bio; look for this picture), but here are some quick tips to keep in mind: ⁠ ⁠ ⫸⫸Don’t Overdo It. ⁠ There is A LOT to see, and it can overwhelming. Keep them in mind when planning your day. ⁠ ⁠ ⫸⫸Bribe the Heck Out of Them. ⁠ We weren't above promising them 🍦or 🧇, and water time (pool and/or 🏖 ) in the afternoons if they behaved at the D-Day sites in the morning.⁠ ⁠ ⫸⫸Check the Tides. ⁠ There's nothing worse than going to see D-Day sites at the beach...and having no beach because of high tide. Low tide is best, so check them before you venture out! ⁠ ⫸⫸Pack a Picnic. ⁠ Don't 100% rely on local places for lunch—several places were closed or open later than stated. At the very least pick up some 🥖🥐 at the bakery to have on standby for hangry little humans. ⁠ ⁠ ⫸⫸Get Your Learn on Before You Go. ⁠ Educate them about what they're going to see and experience. You don't have to go into gory detail, but share some simple facts. More resources are on the blog!⁠ ⁠ I 100% recommend checking out Normandy if you have the chance...don't let your kids deter you from going! ⁠ ⁠ 👉 What do good think? Are these doable? My purse. ⁠ ⁠ I had a crossbody purse that worked fine and dandy and held all my shi...stuff, but it made me nervous 😬. ⁠ ⁠ Let's be honest: I'm usually distracted when I'm out with my kids, which makes me an easier target for theft, especially in Europe.⁠ ⁠ So a couple months ago, after a friend showed me her anti-theft purse, I bought five different ones on Amazon to try 'em out. 🤷🏻‍♀️All bags are not created equal, and I wanted one that would work for me.⁠ ⁠ My favorite from the bunch was this crossbody bucket bag by travelonbags. I've used it on several different trips, and it's my go-to daily purse now, so I feel confident in sharing it with you all.⁠ ⁠ Why do I love this bag? Let me count the ways:⁠ ⁠ + literal stainless steel in the straps so you can't cut them⁠ + the body, sides, and pockets are slash-resistant⁠ + the zippers lock⁠ + RFID blocking pockets ⁠ + side pockets expand (fits small water bottles, umbrella, sunglasses, etc.)⁠ + tethered key clip with LED light⁠ + lightweight (hasn't hurt my shoulder/neck)⁠ + lots of pockets/space for allllllll the things ⁠ ⁠ I love it so much that I have their classic backpack on my wish list (also recommended by a friend) for slightly longer excursions where I need to haul more stuff. ⁠ ⁠ ⫸⫸ Do you have an anti-theft bag that you love and use? It may seem like we are in Italy but we haven’t It may seem like we are in Italy but we haven’t crossed that border yet. The pula arena in Pula Croatia is home to one of the sixth largest surviving Roman arenas, and the only one to have all four sides still preserved. Knowing that it was created between 27BC and AD 68 is absolutely mind blowing, I can never wrap my head around how something so grand and intricate was even built so long ago. It is also so crazy to think people live next door to something so beautiful. The Airbnb we are staying at is a block away and we pass by this beaut a few times a day. ❤️

Let's talk ride height because this can make or br Let's talk ride height because this can make or break a vacation!⁠ ⁠ At Universal I recommend being 42 inches to visit. This does not mean that kids under 42 can't visit or have nothing to do but a lot of the main attractions have a 42 inch or taller ride height.⁠ ⁠ Our youngest is almost tall enough for all the attractions. He has a little ways to go for Hulk, maybe on our next visit! (54 in.) I actually can't believe he was tall enough for Velocicoaster but he loved it! (51 in.)⁠ ⁠ If your child is not tall enough to ride but other people in your group want to ride Universal has a great child swap program. ⁠ ⁠ 👩‍👧One adult stays with the child not riding while the others ride and then you switch. We have used this a lot and I really like this option. ⁠ ⁠ 🎢My biggest tip is to take a look at the rides and attractions before you book your trip. Look for two things:⁠ 1-height requirements⁠ 2- scare factors or interest⁠ ⁠ I have an entire post on the blog about ride expectations. Into the top 5 of my daughter's top 10 destination Into the top 5 of my daughter's top 10 destinations visited and it's wonderful Oman - we spent a week here a few years ago, although we packed it full and were both won over by the country. The highlight for us both? The desert. 🐪 'I remember climbing up gigantic sand dunes to see the most amazing sunset ever (the long climb was worth it)' according to m 8yo. Which is pretty much my memory too. That and the silence, the dunes stretching off in every direction and endless, countless shades of gold, orange, burned, molten caramel. 🐪 It was tough to pick one highlight, given that we saw dolphins in the sea off Muscat, watched a turtle laying eggs in the night and a baby hatching, soaked up the views across a canyon and discovered an oasis in the dry stony mountains. Just to name a few... 🧡🧡🧡

⭐️Three myths I had about Christmas markets⭐ ⭐️Three myths I had about Christmas markets⭐️ ⁠ This is my first Christmas market rodeo out here in Europe (not sure why, but I only made it to one when we lived in Italy a decade ago, but here we are 🤷🏻‍♀️), so I'm learning things as I go. ⁠ ⁠ I thought I'd share a few surprising things I've discovered just in case you didn't know either. ⁠ ⁠ 🧐 MYTH: You have to get glühwein in your mug. ⁠ Since it's what most people mention, I thought that was all you could get to drink at these markets. Nope. You can get hot coco or coffee (with a shot in it if that's how you roll), glühbier (so good), eierpunsch (similar to egg nog), different flavors of mulled wine, non-alcoholic punch, etc. You—and your kids—have options…lots of options.⁠ ⁠ 🧐 MYTH: Markets are only open/fun at night.⁠ Are they more magical at night? Absolutely 💯. But you can absolutely still experience them during the day. They tend to be more crowded at night, and with three kids in tow + crowds with this pandoozy, we've been sticking to markets before the sun goes down, and we're still having a blast.⁠ ⁠ 🧐 MYTH: They're all in one, central location.⁠ Nope...not true. I mean, some *might* be contained in the town's center, but the majority of the ones we've experienced have been spread out around the town with multiple markets within a market, making it more of an experience than a specific destination. ⁠ ⁠ ⫸⫸Was there something you thought you knew about Christmas markets, only to discover that wasn't the case? ⁠ ⁠ ⁠ 📍Metz, France⁠ ---------⤹⤹---------⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠ follow jesstagirl for more fun around Europe. Continuing the tropical theme that's made up most Continuing the tropical theme that's made up most of my daughter's top 5 destinations visited, the Maldives takes no2 spot - our last major trip before the pandemic, part of me wished I'd been locked down there instead! Most of me, if I'm honest. 🌴 On a press trip with Four Seasons resorts, we visited two different resorts on two islands and had some amazing experiences - more snorkelling for her, but there's also an emphasis on marine conservation programmes, which meant some fascinating excursions with marine biologists on hand. In her words: 'I remember seeing spinner dolphins and swimming with a turtle.' 🌴 In all the times I've snorkelled and dived around the world, I have never managed to be in the water with a turtle before - one time, I was even swimming in deeper water around the edge of a reef looking for one, when it decided to swim into the shallows, missing me by feet. So this was an incredible memory for me as well, watching this beautiful creature glides through the water at the end of another reef, itself filled with fish in every colour of the rainbow. And the spinner dolphins were just astonishing - I'd come across their extraordinary acrobatic fears in Octonauts (where else) but seeing them flip and twist out of the water was jaw-dropping. 🌴 It's also a great place to see manta rays, and I was signed up for the programme to spot them if they appeared - alas the weather and the season were against me, and I didn't get the chance. So I'll just have to go back. As well as enjoying the spectacular coastline, we As well as enjoying the spectacular coastline, we also spent our Northumberland trip discovering how to live in the camper van without killing each other 🤣 An awning creates more indoor space but we STILL haven’t received ours (despite ordering it in January 🙄) So here’s what else we found: ☀️ Sunny weather helps as you can live both inside and outside the van. ☀️ Putting things in logical places where you would use them reduces stress. We took a toilet tent, which was tall enough to use as a bathroom/dressing room. We had enough room to keep the packing cubes containing our clothes on one side of the tent and the toilet on the other. ☀️If you haven’t got an awning, a small pop-up tent is brilliant for storing car seats and bedding when they’re not needed. ☀️ Travelling as lightly as possible makes it much easier to stay organised so you’re not falling over everything and things aren’t tumbling out of cupboards as soon as you open them. ☀️It’s important to make sure everyone knows where everything is stored. There’s nothing more annoying than people constantly asking you where stuff is. We’re still making some modifications to both the inside and outside of the van to make life a little easier. Hopefully over the next couple of trips we’ll have it exactly how we want it. I’ll give you a little tour when it’s done. What are your tips for camping in harmony? 😜
