✨ I took a walk in the woods and came out taller than the trees. - Henry David Thoreau ✨⁣
⁣
Do you ever feel this way? I often feel so tiny after time in the forest, realizing how minuscule our place on this earth really is, but what massive damage we have done. ⁣
⁣
Although, I get the point of this quote.. mentally, my heart is full and my mind is clear after time in nature.⁣
⁣
But this is me with poetry.. I’ve never been so great with it because I am very literal. However, I am learning...Cian and I have started a new homeschool ritual of Poetry Teatime. It’s been a fun way to get out of my comfort zone and open up new forms of reading for Cian. ⁣
⁣
I never even knew that he had an interest in poems, but he’s really taken to it. I bought a few books for kids, but what he enjoys more are the classic poets. So many of their writings focus on nature, which is where his love is as well. He’s even begun nature journaling every time we go somewhere - and it’s always a poem. ⁣
⁣
Don’t mind me, I’m just over here adoring what homeschool has brought to us! ⁣
⁣
Every day this child surprises me with his interest in things, his love of learning and excitement to explore all that the world has on offer. ❤️⁣

✨Once upon a time... a girl had a dream. ✨⁣
⁣
A dream to do a multi day trek with her 9 year old son. And off they went to the Andes of Ecuador... 🏔⁣
⁣
I don’t often think of myself as strong or brave, but for a total scaredy cat I have been on some epic adventures! ⁣
⁣
👣 One of the most amazing things I’ve done was earlier this year when Cian and I and my friend hiknmeg and her two girls set off on an amazing South American adventure. ⁣
⁣
We had no guide nor accurate map. All we had was our intuition, a few measly wooden sign boards occasionally set up against a rock to tell us where to go and our own determination. ⁣
⁣
We got lost daily, sometimes many times a day. We got caught in rain showers. Some of us (me! 👋 ) got stuck in muddy ravines and had to be helped up by locals.⁣
⁣
There were tears. There were fears. There was friendship and forgiveness. There was lots of noise, and quite times too.⁣
⁣
Sometimes I just wanted to cry, so I had to dig deep to find the strength to get up that last half mile, straight up hill. Always, straight up hill. I could hardly do it. But I did. Every single day. We all did.⁣
⁣
There were hard moments, but that last day knowing the end was near I felt sadness that it was almost over. I also felt stronger though, knowing what we had accomplished. ⁣
⁣
Two moms, on our own, with kids. ⁣
⁣
🙏 Now, 10 months later I continue to feel thankful I took the opportunity to be brave and do something off the beaten path and totally unknown. ⁣
⁣
💫 I’m grateful a person I had only met a few times trusted me with a trip of a lifetime. ⁣
⁣
💪 And I’m glad to know I CAN do hard things. ⁣
⁣
🌍 Now we wait.. & plan for our next multi-day trek somewhere else in the world!⁣
⁣
✨Explore more. Dream big. Do hard things. ❤️⁣
⁣

A GUIDE TO A STATIC CARAVAN HOLIDAY WITH KIDS // We recently enjoyed a short break in a static caravan at Gallaber Park thornleyleisure on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park 🏞

There are real benefits to this type of holiday with kids and I’ve written up a guide if you are planning a UK holiday in a static caravan this year. Don’t forget, it’s often cheaper and with much more availability, especially if you stay further inland and avoid popular resorts.

📍 The blog is linked in my bio and includes:

• How best to book your static caravan holiday
• Choosing between a private site or holiday park
• Size, spec and configuration of the static caravan
• Facilities - what’s included and things to remember
• What to pack!

📌 Save this post if you have a static caravan holiday booked or are planning one this year 📌

Tell me where you are going in the comments below and why you love a static caravan holiday ⬇️

🌟 Campervan Essentials 🌟

Campervanning looks very different for many people - some prefer a little more luxury, while others are happy with very minimal equipment. I would like to think that we sit somewhere in between those extremes and pride ourselves on only buying and storing things in the van that we consider are essential for making life easier on the road as a family.

🌟➡️ NEW on the BLOG - Our Campervan Essentials! (Link in bio) All recommendations are items we have tried and tested over a considerable period of time, organised within the format of answering questions we have been asked recently.
▪️How can you keep your van clean and tidy on the road?
▪️How do you prepare meals when you are travelling?
▪️How do you manage to travel with children and a dog?
▪️How do you manage to fit everything that you need into such a small space?
▪️What items have you found really useful that I might not have thought of?
▪️What items do you find really useful when travelling with children?

If you could only choose THREE essentials in your campervan, what would they be?

✨ Wild Horses ✨⁣
⁣
When we began our homeschool journey a friend said they were going to study wild horses. Of course, upon hearing that, Cian said he wanted to as well. So, when we had the opportunity to visit Carson Valley, we knew we had to seek out the wild horses that live in the area. ⁣
⁣
What a dream day. We headed out with a local photographer who has spent his life in these hills, photographing wild animals. ⁣
⁣
We learned so much about the horses, the issues they face from the environment, people and the government. It’s such a tricky situation out here. There are lots of different bands of wild horses that roam the Carson Valley and even into the towns. The ones living close to town have been tainted by people feeding them so they are much friendlier (aka less wild!) than these. We couldn’t get even 100 ft away before they would start moving. ⁣
⁣
I had visions of close up photos with the horses, but you won’t get that here in Carson Valley. These are still as wild as wild can be! ⁣
⁣
They are a beautiful site to behold though. I encourage you to visit them some day.. just please do not feed them or try to get too close. Maybe we can eventually help these guys move deeper into the mountains away from all of us!⁣
⁣
Did you know that wild horses still roamed parts of the US? ⁣
⁣

Happy weekend, everyone! ✨

We are exploring beautiful colonial cities in Mexico right now - follow along in my stories to see all the hidden gems we’re visiting (or not so that they can stay hidden 😬)!

This pic is a throwback to our time in super dense Hong Kong. I’m so glad that even among the chaos of a city as populated as HK, it’s still possible to find solitude.

What are you up to this weekend?

We try to teach Eloise the importance of small acts of kindness and how they go along way.

It was amazing for her to see us on the receiving end of abundant honesty and good will.

As I mentioned, when we arrived to Panama City Panama I realized my wallet was gone. We searched high and low, and thought it fell out in the customs conveyor belt.

We knew there was a chance it could have fallen out in the cab, but less likely, plus we paid in cash and didn’t have the name of the cab company to reach out.

The next morning I received a call that my taxi driver was waiting downstairs and had my wallet.

He obviously knew where he dropped us off, and waited 40 mins downstairs (they had to contact our host and then me) until he could personally hand deliver it to me.

I was floored by his kindness, he had nothing to gain by returning my wallet. Yes, it is the right thing to do, but he could have just as easily turned it into his company and let me worry about it instead of going on a wild goose chase to get it back to me!

It was so kind and reminded me that there are truly selfless people, kind, good hearted people out there! ❤️❤️❤️

PS: ironic side note- yesterday we got in a Uber and hidden in the side door I found another passengers wallet and made sure the Uber driver had it to return to them! 1-what goes around comes around! 2-we all need to do a better job taking care of our sh*t! 🤪

What made us trade in the vibrant lively streets of Cartagena for gloomy Chicago....?

We have returned home for a super brief pause and reset from our trip. This decision was not easy, but was the right and responsible one.

We arrived in Cartagena two Friday’s ago and immediately feel in love with the city. By Saturday we were in a weekend lock down in which we weren’t allowed to set foot outside our Airbnb from noon-5am.

Monday morning the city was reopened but we almost got standard across town due to a taxi strike. Luckily we made it across town but had to get dropped off outside the wall because the entrances were blocked by police.

Later that day we were waking out of the grocery store and mild chaos ensued. Literally as we were walking out at 4pm they started closing up, pulling closures down and locking up the parking gate. As we walked home it was like a domino effect of business after business jarringly locking up.

Protests were taking place across the nation, objecting tax reform. We could hear chanting from beyond the wall but didn’t witness anything. We rushed home and were told not to worry, we would be safe but it would be wise to stay indoors (again!).

Tuesday was wide open with no protest or lock downs, but the again Wednesday evening the businesses were closed in fear of looting as a result of protests.

Lucky for us Cartagena was very mild compared to other parts of the country, unfortunately I can’t same the same about where we had planned to head next, Medellin.

The lock downs were daily, and the protests were much more violent. We knew we had to get out of Colombia because at this time it was just too volatile.

Our next stop was supposed to be Peru but they just implemented double masks and face shields in public spaces and 6pm curfew.

The hardest part was we just didn’t have access to the information to know what was happening when/where.

This is all part of the experience of traveling during a time like this, so we can’t complain too much. We LOVED our time in Cartagena even if it was somewhat limited.

Do you like posed or natural pics?

Here’s a photo of my motley crew from Father’s Day enjoying a crazy moment together on the beach.

This is half posed, half natural I guess, but I think I like the natural ones.

I feel like I get the best pics this way. And this was right before my three munchkins started to fill their shoes with the pebbles on the beach 😊

Funnily enough I had a conversation about how sandy beaches are so much better than pebble beaches today.

What do you think?

Is a Sandy beach better?

This is me and my best friend!

We have such a special bond, we are truly the best of friends and tell each other everyday!!!

Now that I think of it 🧐 Eloise also told the waitress at the farm yesterday that SHE was her best friend.... and she told a neighboring table in Croatia that her cousin Gigi was her bestie...

and the Marco from the pool in Costa Rica was her BF....and the boy that kicked her the soccer ball one time in Split... oh and the random sculpture in the center of town....also all her best friends! 🤔

I am beginning to think her and I have different definitions of what best friends means....but WE are the bestest friends!

Of all the places we have been, I am the most sad to leave here. This town of Cortina d’Ampezzo in the Dolomites region is pure happiness.

The mountains (the Italian Alps) are the most majestic we have ever seen and the crystal blue lakes are like glass.

The town itself is described the crown jewel of the Dolomites and gives me cozy Aspen vibes with all the European charm.

It has been refreshing to have cooler temperatures after the heat waves we had in other parts of Italy. The weather feels like fall but the town seems to create the holiday feeling year round.

Our family is in LOVE ❤️

It may seem like we are in Italy but we haven’t crossed that border yet.

The pula arena in Pula Croatia is home to one of the sixth largest surviving Roman arenas, and the only one to have all four sides still preserved.

Knowing that it was created between 27BC and AD 68 is absolutely mind blowing, I can never wrap my head around how something so grand and intricate was even built so long ago.

It is also so crazy to think people live next door to something so beautiful. The Airbnb we are staying at is a block away and we pass by this beaut a few times a day. ❤️

Just look at the colour of this sea! We had an amazing few days on Iona, swimming in the sea every day!

We stayed at the lovely ionapods which are heated and very conveniently located at the North of the island to get to the beaches, 5 minutes walk from the abbey and right below Dun I, the highest point on Iona.

I didn’t realise how beautiful Iona was until we arrived. But it definitely captured our hearts and we’ll be back one day! 💕

Let’s just forget about the ferry cancellation on the way back and a rather annoying long detour to get home! We made it and I’m pleased that I feel much more capable of taking the kids away on my own. I think that was the first time I’ve driven onto the ferry myself (aside the tiny one to Gigha!).

Which Scottish island would you like to visit?

We absolutely LOVED this off the beaten path adventure in visiting the mouth of the centina river. The blue hole also nicknamed the dragons eye is over 490 feet deep and is intriguingly beautiful, but also slightly eerie.⠀
⠀
We tried to visit a few week prior and ended up at the actual river which was also so special, but not our desired destination, so making it here was a dream!⠀
⠀
Postscript: If you zoom in this image it is true my daughter does not have pants on. Lets "say" this is due to her playing in the water, and definitely NOT because she tried to potty in the bushes, by herself, and pissed all over her shorts! 👍🏻

"How did the kids do in Normandy?" That's been the number one question y'all have asked about our trip to see the D-Day sites.

Here's my answer: They did surprisingly well.

My kids (8, 6, and 4 years old) are pretty well-behaved most of the time, but they're still kids, and we were seeing some very "heavy" sites: cemeteries, memorials, war museums, etc., so our expectations were a little higher than usual.

I wrote a blog post where I dive into these (and more) deeper (link in bio; look for this picture), but here are some quick tips to keep in mind:

⫸⫸Don’t Overdo It.
There is A LOT to see, and it can overwhelming. Keep them in mind when planning your day.

⫸⫸Bribe the Heck Out of Them.
We weren't above promising them 🍦or 🧇, and water time (pool and/or 🏖 ) in the afternoons if they behaved at the D-Day sites in the morning.

⫸⫸Check the Tides.
There's nothing worse than going to see D-Day sites at the beach...and having no beach because of high tide. Low tide is best, so check them before you venture out!

⫸⫸Pack a Picnic.
Don't 100% rely on local places for lunch—several places were closed or open later than stated. At the very least pick up some 🥖🥐 at the bakery to have on standby for hangry little humans.

⫸⫸Get Your Learn on Before You Go.
Educate them about what they're going to see and experience. You don't have to go into gory detail, but share some simple facts. More resources are on the blog!

I 100% recommend checking out Normandy if you have the chance...don't let your kids deter you from going!

👉 What do good think? Are these doable? I’ve got more tips + details are on the blog, but if you've been there, I'd love to hear your advice, too!

Hello 👋 We've had so many new followers since we started travelling again, so I thought I'd do a little re-introduction as it's been a looooooooong while since the last time I did this 😘

🚐 I'm Jenny, Mum of the Lynn family. I work as a travel blogger (yes, that is actually a real job that earns you money 😜) - I love the flexibility it provides me around our family and the travel opportunities it brings.

🚐 With Jay (hubby) and our two boys (Arthur 7, Ezra 6) we live in the Peak District 🇬🇧. I also run peakdistrictkids - which has become the go-to website for families exploring the UK's oldest national park 🥾 and the website receives over 180k page views per month.

🚐 As a family we love epic adventures. We have lived in India, trekked the Himalayas, and traversed Africa in a Land Rover.

🚐 We jumped on the pandemic VAN-waggon in June '20 and bought our Mazda Bongo camper from eBay for £7k. We were supposed to be taking a family gap year and travelling overland from London to Sydney last year - a trip Jay and I did back in 2007 🙄. But we absolutely love our Bongo; he's part of the family now 🥰.

🚐 We are all Aussie citizens as Jay and I used to live in Sydney. The boys have never even visited, and it's currently the top country they want to travel to. One day...

🚐 I've never liked sea food. And when I decided to become vegetarian over three years ago, it was a huge relief to just say to people that I'm vegetarian, rather than explain I don't like sea food 🙈. Although I still sometimes eat the boys left over fish fingers 🤷‍♀️.

🚐 Oh and we're currently spending the summer travelling around France in our Bongo and having the best time ever 🥰🇫🇷.

Right, I think that's enough waffling on about myself 🤣.

Big hugs,
Jenny x
