What is your first memory of visiting another country?

Last summer my oldest graduated from elementary school and to celebrate we took a trip to Paris with his best friend and his mom. He had been asking for years to go to Paris and while it seemed crazy we decided to not miss the opportunity to make some memories. I was 19 when I first visited another country and I remember how it changed me. My view on the world expanded beyond this bubble of my community and local and national news. I wanted that for my son -particularly in the weirdo world we live in today.

This picture is of the two of them catching their first glimpse of the Eiffel Tower. I just absolutely love this. I have always loved Paris and to share it with my son was beyond magical. (My son is the ginger on the right).

What was probably just as exciting was to show him our last name, Belanger, etched on the tower. They put the names of all the people that worked on it and Jean-Baptiste Belanger was a mathematician whose work in hydraulic engineering was used in the tower. We haven't been able to trace back any exact ancestral match but it is pretty cool regardless.

I have a zillion flower pictures to share and while I am excited to post those, I was a bit nostalgic today. Nostalgic for the time when we could travel freely and explore. Where my son could see, touch, smell, and savor cultures different than ours. Don't worry, tomorrow will be flowers 🌿🥰

Tell me what your first or favorite memory was of visiting another country!

A memory I'll cherish forever. 📸 Taken at a Neighborhood Park in Kauai

We know that our kids rapidly developing minds always have a need to be stimulated. As parents, it can be easy to stick them in front of a TV or an iPad and call it a day if for nothing else to get a few minutes of quiet or alone time.

On our last day in Kauai, we had about 3 hours to burn before our flight back to the mainland. We contemplated what activities we could do to fill the time, while still being mindful of COVID. While we were driving around and researching a few fun options, Michael peered down a side street and found a small park with a big open field in the middle of a quiet neighborhood. He looked over to me with the biggest smile and said "this is perfect" while executing a rather dramatic U-turn. I was VERY hesitant because there were no swings, slides, or fancy playground equipment. However, after seeing the light in Michaels's eyes and hearing the kids yell "Park!" I knew this was where we were going to spend our next 3 hours before heading to the airport.

As soon as we got the kids out of the car and their feet hit the ground, I realized that Michael was right. I didn't see it at first, but the kids had everything they needed. There were older kids riding skateboards and the kids were fascinated by their tricks. A father and son were dribbling a basketball around, which reminded the kids of their Aunt Kristen and took us down memory lane watching her most recent game. There were fitness tires on the ground and the kids had a blast hiding in them and jumping from one tire to the next. The kids even learned how to turn on the park water fountains - of course, this led to us having to quickly change clothes before boarding the airplane. More than anything they just got to run around. Up and down the field. Chasing each other. Chasing nothing. Just running.

Michael's open mind allowed the kids to make the most of their last few hours in paradise and wore them out enough that they fell right to sleep on our overnight flight.

We don't always realize it, but our children's imaginations can be our best tool in keeping them thriving. 🌱

🌟 Campervan Essentials 🌟

Campervanning looks very different for many people - some prefer a little more luxury, while others are happy with very minimal equipment. I would like to think that we sit somewhere in between those extremes and pride ourselves on only buying and storing things in the van that we consider are essential for making life easier on the road as a family.

🌟➡️ NEW on the BLOG - Our Campervan Essentials! (Link in bio) All recommendations are items we have tried and tested over a considerable period of time, organised within the format of answering questions we have been asked recently.
▪️How can you keep your van clean and tidy on the road?
▪️How do you prepare meals when you are travelling?
▪️How do you manage to travel with children and a dog?
▪️How do you manage to fit everything that you need into such a small space?
▪️What items have you found really useful that I might not have thought of?
▪️What items do you find really useful when travelling with children?

If you could only choose THREE essentials in your campervan, what would they be?

Chatsworth farmyard and playground are reopening on 5th August! 🐐🚜🐖⁣
⁣
Tickets must be pre booked online for a specific time slot. Although it is still free to run around the grounds of the estate (wearing a Knight's tabard should you so wish 😉)⁣
⁣
From the chatsworthofficial website:⁣
'The farmyard and playground will reopen on 5 August with increased safety measures in place including the temporary suspension of the tractor trailer tours and animal handling sessions, the temporary closure of the indoor picnic room and no food or drink in the playground.⁣
⁣
There are three two-hour sessions each day beginning at 10am, 12.30pm and 3pm. There is also no pass out/re-entry for the farmyard. Once visitors have left the farmyard, they will not be able to return without a new booking.'⁣

These days, visiting the Masai village of Baraka and nearby Mtu Wa Mbu, were one of our favorite travel experiences so far.
✨
Six nights a week, our home in Arusha was watched over by the gentleman pictured here - a Masai warrior who took his role as our security guard very seriously but was always ready to laugh and play with our kids. Six evenings a week our kids would wait eagerly for his arrival and beg for ten more minutes to play when we tried to round them up for bed.
✨
The seventh night of each week he spends at home, traveling several hours each way by bus and foot to spend that one night at home with his wife and 5 young children.
✨
On this weekend we went home with him (though in a car) and it was the best invitation we’ve ever accepted.

Still buzzing on an amazing hike yesterday... I headed off to the east coast of Singapore on Thursday to spend some time in the #joochiat area.

It’s not the first time I’ve been there, and I hope it won’t be the last! The colours yesterday just POPPED under a very hot sun and a brilliant blue sky.

I felt so lucky to be able to get out and explore when so many of our friends and family are under lockdown or snowed in. It’s easy not to do anything (or just not to post about it) because I feel guilty or worry that it will upset people.

But the truth is I lived vicariously through everyone travelling last summer and the pictures kept me going. The reason I’m a travel writer is because travelling gives me purpose and without it I feel lost.

So I’m hoping my feed can inspire your wanderlust from my remote corner of the world and, if it can, then I hope these colours can bring you some joy today 🥰

Be a walking contradiction.
Be strong and
Be soft.

Be deep and light hearted.
Be confident and humble.
Be someone with a quick wit and
A cheap sense of humour.

Be content climbing a mountain
And enjoying the sweetness of doing nothing.

The world may try and classify you as one thing ,because
That is far easier to understand
Than a person who has a little bit everything in them.

And you may feel misunderstood for a while,
But remember,
Your people can only find you
If you're brave enough to be Your self.

There are parts of you
That you have yet to discover.
There is a greater love
That you have yet to find.
There are experiences
That are far beyond your imagination.

And it's All waiting for you.
Life is waiting for you.

And if there's anything that 2020 taught me,
It is to live everyday,
It is to be grateful for breathing every second,
It is to not expect much
Life's too uncertain for crying over what couldnt happen, Felicia!
So go make the most of it.

Bring the bebeh! This is the photo I have in my mind when I tell folks to travel with their kids. It was a perfect evening.

Wendy was only awake for the entree. Since the restaurant was half empty, she was able to sleep next to Tiernan and me on a bench seat. Then we enjoyed a leisurely drink and dessert on this amazing rooftop with friends. No one had to sacrifice their night to sit in the room with the baby (hotel baby sitters aren’t for us).
#
I remember being so worried she wasn’t warm enough, but really she did not need this jumper in March in Córdoba 😅Basically the epitome of a first time parent...

What can I say, I’m a sucker for a sunset. Isn’t it amazing how something that happens every single day can be so magical and mesmerising every single time? You cannot beat a sunset on the beach. Even a ‘slightly cloudy, hurray when the sun peeks out’ one and the bonus is the girls said it’s the best day ever which is all we can ask for. 💛 🧡 💙

Just one happy beach hopping family…and Roma. Who apparently is channeling her inner model here. Not sure why. But I can assure you she was living her very best beach life because quite frankly she was made for this. She was also made for us and is the literal glue and joy that binds and completes us. A ray of sunshine and the rainbow she was always meant to be. Norfolk, as always you are lovely 🤍

Glow rhswisley - keeping the festive feeling going.

Back in October when the illusion was life would be more normal, I did a flurry of Christmas activity bookings to the point where I actually forgot about this one 🙉! It was only when I was searching through my inbox for something else, I remembered I’d booked it 🤦🏼‍♀️.

Given that 2021 has started off even bumpier than anticipated and is probably set to get even more unsettled, it was a great tonic to lift all our spirits. I also got to try out my new phone camera and I’m very impressed with it’s nighttime capabilities (see stories and let me know what you think).

Have you ever booked something and then forgotten all about it? Please tell me I’m not the only one ⬇️!

Half term is just a week away. Can you believe it?

With so many more places open I feel a tad overwhelmed with the choice and haven’t booked ANYTHING yet (aside from a bank holiday lunch out out with my folks - yum!).

We have however got plans for this weekend. Tomorrow we’re off to Plymouth for a full on day out including theboxplymouth, boxkitchenbar and nationalmarineaquarium.

After last weekend’s weather I couldn’t bear having the kids bouncing off the walls by Sunday again!

Maybe a good day out will motivate me to tackle our half term calendar?! 🤞

If you’re looking for school holiday inspiration I have a new blog post up about what’s on around England. There’s a handy link in my profile 👍

What’s your plans for this weekend and beyond?

This right here 🦄

Every teacher along the way is different, some better, some not so great... And that quality time is spent institutionalising these beautiful free spirits so they can spend their adult life doubting their intuition 🤔

Maybe people are so unhappy because they are denying their inner truth... We weren't born to follow the routine given to us by the powers that be. We were born with a deeper purpose, to follow our hearts into our unknowns and leave an impact which improves and betters humanity (or maybe even simply the lives of our children) 💝

School isn't for people like me 🤣
Unschool is for the rebels and leaders (that's people like me)🦄

ROADS LESS TRAVELED

Continuing with the topic of road trips. Have you ever been forced to detour? The beauty and challenge of road trips is that you never know exactly where you may end up. This bridge, for example, is the exit point of US military base that we had to pass through on one of the detours in California few years back. Yep, that's right - a military base. That was the only way to bypass one of the closed roads (due to mudslides). I'm guessing they wouldn't have let us through if there were other road options.🤔 Why only the bridge you may ask? We'll, that's because we were greeted by the sign advising of no cell phones and pictures, and then by the army guys advising to stay on the main road only. We listened 🙃
