My FB memories are killing me at the mo 😭. This one popped up this morning of Ez in #Bangkok getting stuck into some noodles. He must be 16 months old here 💚.⁣⁣

Anyways, hope everyone is doing ok? I've been a bit quiet on this account as I've been focusing on peakdistrictkids, closer to home, and we've barely been out in the #Bongo (except for school runs 🤷‍♀️)...⁣⁣

And we had the weirdest realisation this week... something happened that was totally foreign to us... Jay has annual leave days outstanding for this year that he needs to take 🤣. That has NEVER happened to us in the 20 years we've been together. 😱⁣⁣

Just look at the colour of this sea! We had an amazing few days on Iona, swimming in the sea every day!

We stayed at the lovely ionapods which are heated and very conveniently located at the North of the island to get to the beaches, 5 minutes walk from the abbey and right below Dun I, the highest point on Iona.

I didn’t realise how beautiful Iona was until we arrived. But it definitely captured our hearts and we’ll be back one day! 💕

Let’s just forget about the ferry cancellation on the way back and a rather annoying long detour to get home! We made it and I’m pleased that I feel much more capable of taking the kids away on my own. I think that was the first time I’ve driven onto the ferry myself (aside the tiny one to Gigha!).

Campervanning looks very different for many people - some prefer a little more luxury, while others are happy with very minimal equipment. This is ten-year-old Georgi. She wears this elephant shirt until I force her to put it in the hamper. She writes me a “love note” each night before bed because a simple goodnight kiss will not suffice and she must express her enormous heart in words. She knows what she wants and she goes after it - hitting a mountain bike jump at full force to get both wheels in the air, searching craigslist for a violin she can afford to kickstart her musical passion, and never giving up on a hard project at the climbing gym. In a few days she turns eleven and I’m so freaking proud of her, but gosh her ten-year-old version is going to be pretty hard to beat.

Hello 👋 We've had so many new followers since we started travelling again, so I thought I'd do a little re-introduction as it's been a looooooooong while since the last time I did this 😘

🚐 I'm Jenny, Mum of the Lynn family. I work as a travel blogger (yes, that is actually a real job that earns you money 😜) - I love the flexibility it provides me around our family and the travel opportunities it brings.

🚐 With Jay (hubby) and our two boys (Arthur 7, Ezra 6) we live in the Peak District 🇬🇧. I also run peakdistrictkids - which has become the go-to website for families exploring the UK's oldest national park 🥾 and the website receives over 180k page views per month.

🚐 As a family we love epic adventures. We have lived in India, trekked the Himalayas, and traversed Africa in a Land Rover.

🚐 We jumped on the pandemic VAN-waggon in June '20 and bought our Mazda Bongo camper from eBay for £7k. We were supposed to be taking a family gap year and travelling overland from London to Sydney last year - a trip Jay and I did back in 2007 🙄. But we absolutely love our Bongo; he's part of the family now 🥰.

🚐 We are all Aussie citizens as Jay and I used to live in Sydney. The boys have never even visited, and it's currently the top country they want to travel to. One day...

🚐 I've never liked sea food. And when I decided to become vegetarian over three years ago, it was a huge relief to just say to people that I'm vegetarian, rather than explain I don't like sea food 🙈. Although I still sometimes eat the boys left over fish fingers 🤷‍♀️.

🚐 Oh and we're currently spending the summer travelling around France in our Bongo and having the best time ever 🥰🇫🇷.

Right, I think that's enough waffling on about myself 🤣.

His papa is back!!! Which means matching overalls and zlandbrand hats - because a big helper needs to dress for the job. We are busy, busy, busy over here with an airstream restoration AND a van conversion but I love seeing our driveway packed with fun projects.

King Alfred’s Tower was completed in 1779, damaged by a plane crash in 1944 and rebuilt in the 1980s.

Definitely a interesting place to sit with a picnic and let the kids run wild.

There are so many places to see in Luxor and every one is worth a visit if you have the time (and are worth making time for). Most are captivating even on a second or third visit.
✨
The impressive but infrequently visited memorial temple of Rameses II, known as the Ramesseum, is one we happily return to over and over.
✨
There's much to explore and plenty of space to play without disturbing tour groups or the site itself, making it a great place to bring wriggly kids
✨
Tickets for Ramesseum need to be purchased from the Antiquities Ticket Office. It's 80 Egyptian Pounds for adults, kids tickets for 6 and up are half price and 5 and under are free.
✨

SURF'S UP! 🏄⁣⁣

The boys had their first ever surf lesson today with manusurf_school_camp at Longeville-sur-Mer! An hour lesson costs €35 per person and they have English-speaking instructors.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
There were five kids in the lesson. They started by playing 'Musical surf boards' (surf boards instead of chairs on the sand 😉) and by the end of the lesson, Arthur was managing to ride a wave standing up for a few seconds! Ez was laughing throughout and preferred the boogie-board technique 😜⁣⁣

They had so much fun that we've booked them in for another session tomorrow 🤙🏄⁣⁣

Last night felt like a massive achievement and one big sigh of relief for us....
It's been nearly 9months since we took on the exciting, frustrating roller coaster that was building our new home on wheels.
Our travelling life was paused after an accident saw our original home on wheels written off. Since then our lives have been filled with life changing lessons, amazing highs and some very difficult and frustrating times.
Through all of that we never lost sight of why we decided to live this life in the first place.
It's been nearly 9months of building our new van, with the aim of heading to Qld to welcome our newest little tribe member.
Deadlines came and went and along with it our confidence that we would ever get the job done.
As this little members arrival earth side got closer and closer we questioned if we had made the right decision. Was take on such a massive job on our own to much for us to handle!?

The answer...No, we Bloody did it!!!
We built a caravan, we hit the road for the second time 4 days ago and last night we crossed the Boarder into QLD.
We are still a little shocked we made it to this point but are so incredibly proud of what we have achieved.

Feeling a bit homesick for our cozy trailer, but glad to be back near these Blue Ridge Mountains.

Alex is in California finishing up a travel nurse contract while I solo parent on the East Coast and kickstart our next big project. We are used to living in such close quarters together so this separation is especially difficult. Looking forward to having our family reunited and enjoying more scenes like this together 😍.

NUMBER 10 is TANZANIA 🇹🇿 - the boys were 2 and 4 years old.

I'll be honest, Tanzania wouldn't be in my top ten. This is the hardest country we've travelled with the boys. We were self driving from South Africa in a #landroverdefender and on a budget - Tanzania is more geared towards high end tourism and organised tours. Safaris are extortionately expensive compared to Southern African countries, the police road checks were the most aggressive we have experienced, and we had to deal with unexpected monsoonal rains and washed out roads.

But the boys remember:

🇹🇿 the epic wildlife encounters at the quieter (and cheaper) parks we visited - mating lions close to our Land Rover, and being the only witnesses to hundreds of elephants at a watering hole
🇹🇿 a snow capped Mt Kilimanjaro
🇹🇿 the awesome hospitality at utengulecoffeelodge where we camped on a helipad with incredible sunset views for a week.

Tanzania was the most challenging country for independent travel, but totally worth it.

AD | You see the little wooden hut to the right of this photo? That's our own personal washblock that comes with our pitch!

We've got a shower, loo, kitchen sink, and a big fridge/freezer ALL TO OURSELVES! The height of bongo luxury 🙌How cool is that?! I've only ever come across pitches like this in Namibia.

We're now in Roussillon on the south coast. This is another #eurocampindependent site, but very different to the last one - this place is HUGE with so much going on! We generally lean towards smaller sites, but over the years we've tried a couple of bigger sites out and they've always been a huge success - mostly because the boys love the onsite waterparks! 💦

FINALLY ready to share our wee little dreams with everyone! We are going to build out an overlander and travel internationally - making the trek down the panamerican highway for as far as we can comfortably venture. Of course, our launch date has been pushed back and it’s still “to be determined” based on when borders open up, and when it is safe (and smart) to travel again. I do not want our experience to be full of face masks and social distancing because we love meeting people and enjoying local culture. This could take years - we really have no idea! So what are we going to do in the meantime? Well we did the unthinkable - we bought a house *gasp* AND we have 3 airstream renovations lined up for clients (and maybe one for ourselves). Our family misses the road so much, there have been lots of ups and downs during this transition - but with Alex working with ICU patients, and meeting so many obstacles with campground closures, we knew that this was the right thing to do. I’ll be sharing house projects, airstream renovations, daily life with kids, and all the planning that is going to go into our overland adventure - from choosing a vehicle to mapping out our route. Stay tuned for lots of exciting changes!

Sometimes they smile for me...and sometimes I take pictures of their butts 🤣. ⁠

I kept asking them to turn around for a nice picture, but they'd only half turn around, and only one at a time...I never got all three of them together. ⁠

This back-and-forth went on for several minutes until I just gave up and took this picture 🤷🏻‍♀️.⁠

There was a fellow mom standing next to me cracking up over the entire scene taking place in front of her. She didn't speak English, but she sure as heck understood what I was going through. ⁠

We laughed and shared a knowing "oh them" mom look that transcended language 💞.⁠

So 20 years from now when my kids ask to see pictures of all three of them together during our time overseas, I hope they don't mind that 90% of those 📸 are of their backside. ⁠

It's a good thing so many of the temples around Luxor are fun for kids to explore, because the actual play areas are not terribly impressive.

To be clear, our kids are going to want to ride a ride, no matter how ramshackle but they are very ramshackle.
✨
Whenever we spend a bit of time in Cairo, where there are sushi restaurants and indoor snowfields, we're reminded of how much of a village the west bank of Luxor is.
✨
We love the slow pace of life in Luxor and wouldn't think of trading it for the hectic pace of Cairo - except when we're looking for sushi or a playground.
✨

Happy Friday all 🎉. Bringing you the boys' next top country in their countdown, to hopefully keep those travel dreams alive through the groundhog days of the longest month on record 💚.

NUMBER 5 is Nepal 🇳🇵(the boys were 2 and 4 years old)

The full days sat on a bus, navigating winding, pot-holed roads means that Nepal can be challenging 🤢. Or maybe just fly between destinations?

But when you’re carried around the Himalayas in a doko (basket used by porters) it makes hiking at altitude so much easier 😉. This photo is one of my favourite family travel memories, so I absolutely love that the boys put Nepal in their top 10 💚💚.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

This is our 3rd Christmas in a camper. It has simplified our celebration, mainly because we don’t have the space for bulky toys or large feasts. Each year looks a little different than the year before - whether it’s a trip to Home Depot for a tree in the desert or a snowy adventure to chop down our own. It’s not always possible to honor the same traditions, or to be near family, so we create new ways to embrace the holiday season. This year we decorated the tree with pine cones and acorn caps gathered from our forest backyard, the kids colored their own wrapping paper, and tonight we will move our home to a new spot so we can wake up surrounded by nature in one of the most magical places.

All bongos need a hammock. 🙌

We bought this hammock from a decathlonindia when we lived in Bangalore a few years ago. It's been all over India, then on our travels through Africa, and now it is packed away in our #mazdabongo for whenever there's a handy tree near our pitch.

I've had a few people ask how we attach the hammock to our camper. Bongos tend to have three strong hooks under the AFT on the sliding door side. I've read somewhere that there hooks are for a specific bongo awning 🤷‍♀️, but for us they work perfectly for the hammock 👌.
