One thing you should know about our family is that One thing you should know about our family is that we are HUGE UNC fans! Mike went to graduate school there and I commuted to Chapel Hill just about every weekend for two years from my consulting job. You can’t spend any time in Chapel HIll and not become a devoted basketball fan! 🏀And naturally, we have raised our kids to bleed Carolina blue: they’ve always worn the gear, watched all the basketball games, fly the flag on game day, and have made multiple trips across the country to visit the campus. In 2016, we decided to follow the team to Maui for the Maui Invitational. 🌺🌴The tournament is held over Thanksgiving week every year in Lahaina, but UNC attends only every 4th year. That year, UNC won the entire tournament and we were there for every game! It was an amazing way to kick off the college basketball season. We decided from that point on, we would spend every 4th Thanksgiving on Maui cheering for the Tar Heels. 2020 is the year we were supposed to go back to Maui. The tournament wasn’t canceled, but it was moved to Asheville, NC and we decided not to go. It’s a bummer to miss out this year, but we’ll be cheering them on from home with our flag flying proud. Go Heels! Maui 2024!🌈

OCEAN THERAPY (well, technically gulf rather than OCEAN THERAPY (well, technically gulf rather than ocean, but same effect). We have been debating on whether to venture out on a road trip, just to get some mental break (mostly to help my sanity 😂), but didn't want to plan anything knowing how quickly things tend to change nowadays. Our other criteria was a place we can get to in a day.  For those of you who may not be very familiar with American Midwest, that really limited the options.  Initially, we were thinking of Hilton Head, since we enjoyed it few years back.  But apparently it's a pretty popular place this summer and everything is sold out if you wait until last minute.  So instead, we ended up on Navarre Beach (that is on Florida panhandle, for those geography lovers out there 😀). 15 hours in the car and here we are.  First day in (and judging by the happy emojis), we're happy with our decision. #anbatravels2020 #roadtripusa #roadtripwithkids #longdrives #exploringfamily #bringthekids #beachview #wavescrashing #gulfshores #floridapanhandle #panhandle #florida #usatravel #beachvacation #navarrebeach #lifeisbetteratthebeach #beach #ouradventures #ourtribetravels #roadtrip2020 #familyadventure

Hello world, long time no talk! #ad . We’ve bee Hello world, long time no talk! #ad . We’ve been taking some time off to rediscover my hometown of Spokane, WA this summer. So many things are keeping us busy these days, and I haven’t done a good job of sharing our explorations with you all! . Back in June, we took some time to walk along the Centennial Trail, a 37 mile paved road that winds through the city. The trail follows the Spokane River, and it’s a great way to get to see some beautiful parts of the city. . But on hot summer days, it can get pretty hot! Using our hoo_rag bandanas are a great way to enjoy the hike while keeping the sweat off our faces. Plus, if you’re like my daughter, it can make you pretty fashionable too! 🤪 . TRAVEL DURING PANDEMIC. After living in our person TRAVEL DURING PANDEMIC. After living in our personal bubble for 3 months, it felt very weird to get on the road. We also had doubts on how traveling during pandemic would be, especially to the state with increasing number of cases. If you're wondering too, here are our observations of Navarre Beach, Florida (broken out in 2 sections cause of space limit). The biggest one - social distancing and masks tend to disappear as you get further South. Coming from Illinois that has been hit pretty hard and where masks are pretty much mandatory, it's very noticeable. Drive - Rest areas are open and seem to be a bit more of a mix between people in masks and without.  Can't say the same about gas stations. We had to use bathrooms in Tennessee and Kentucky (the rest areas at Tennessee entrance coming from North were under construction) and were the only ones in masks, including the workers.  We didn't get the "you're crazy" looks either though. 😀 Beach - Plenty of people, but still enough space for everyone to keep the distance unless you want to lounge right in front of the water - that gets crowded. Overall most people don't keep the 6 feet when setting their own umbrellas, few do.  But again, still plenty of space to distance yourself, especially further down the beach, away from high rises and hotels. Water - We figured out the mystery we attributed to weekend influx when we saw a traffic jam leaving the beach on Saturday night as we were driving in vs noone, but us, in the water and few people on the beach on Sunday.  It wasn't the weekend at all, it was the waves and seaweed 😂 With calm and clean waters on other days, it definitely got more crowded.  But open water is open water and we still were able to swim without anyone by our side. BTW, not covid related, super calm and crystal clear waters are more of a rarity there, I guess, but we were lucky to enjoy it several mornings/early afternoons. Restaurants and stores are to come next. The highlight of our day but not without a bit of The highlight of our day but not without a bit of effort... We arrived at More London around 12:30pm and it wasn't working. 😬 One of the mums who were around told me that it’s usually closed from 12pm to 2pm! . . The kids disappointment was so big that we decided to wait and hope for the best! Lucky that we usually have some things in the car: mats, colouring book and pens. They managed to entertain themselves in the shade for one hour and a half until the BIG moment. At 2pm on the dot they were back again and it sounded like the beginning of a gig... all the kids who were patiently waiting stood up and ran like crazy towards the fountains! STAYCATION DONE! . . ...and just like that it’s STAYCATION DONE! . . ...and just like that it’s all done...our first staycation in a long time and our first holiday post COVID-19. If I have to give you one piece of advice it would be to research research research where you’re going. There are still lots of places not open yet or running at a very reduced service. It’s a shame because I always loved a little bit of the element of surprise when going on holiday; hoping I’d uncover a gem when we got there. However in this new world it’s a little difficult. For example, some restaurants remain closed, are offering a different menu or are only allowing half the number of diners in than they normally would. We also found a number attractions are remaining closed until mid-August while they finalise arrangements. “Collect moments, not things.” I have this quo “Collect moments, not things.” I have this quote sitting on my desk on a beautiful wooden plaque that my late husband and I picked up on one of our trips to Key West. It is such a great reminder to make moments. . Since the new moon last week, I’ve felt some shifts…creative energy shifts. It reminded me I am in control of my life. I can turn dreams into realities. So I started thinking about what I wanted for the remainder of this year. I mean, its been a crap shoot of a year so far, am I right? I wanted to be specific about my intentions and make them really freaking awesome. . I decided I wanted to adventure more. I love camping, being outside, hiking, watching the sunset, sitting my a fire, waking up and having a cup of hot coffee outside. I try to incorporate all of this in our lives at home, but some times you just need a chance of scenery. . I’ve started researching bigger cars, ones that can tow a small trailer. Trailer with a bathroom, heat and air conditioning are a must. I know, I’m more of a glamper than a camper, but if mama ain’t happy ain’t nobody happy. lol. I own it. I’m ok with that. 😉 . So as I plan out our fall and maybe even winter activities, I’m curious to know where are your favorite places to visit? Northeast, down south, out west, doesn’t matter..What we don’t get to this fall, we’ll plan for next year. I’m thinking a National Park trip in the next year or so..🏕 . So take a second to daydream or reminisce. Where would you go if you could go anywhere in the states or Canada. Lakeside? Beaches? Mountains? MONDAY MONDAY . . It comes round so quickly doesn’t it?!?! This week is a busy one for us, homeschooling continues as we prepare for my little boy’s 7th birthday! He had wanted a Pokemon bouncy castle party with his friends, but sadly that won’t be able to go ahead now. We have some surprises planned for him, which I hope he’ll enjoy just as much. . . This week we will hopefully hear confirmation of the plans for the “air bridges” enabling us to travel abroad. What do you think? Will it happen? Would you travel if you could? I have to be honest and say I’m not convinced...as much as I would love to hop on a plane, I think there are still too many risks - am I wrong? I’d love to know what you think.... . . ROADS LESS TRAVELED Continuing with the topic of ROADS LESS TRAVELED Continuing with the topic of road trips. Have you ever been forced to detour? The beauty and challenge of road trips is that you never know exactly where you may end up. This bridge, for example, is the exit point of US military base that we had to pass through on one of the detours in California few years back. Yep, that's right - a military base. That was the only way to bypass one of the closed roads (due to mudslides). I'm guessing they wouldn't have let us through if there were other road options.🤔 Why only the bridge you may ask? We'll, that's because we were greeted by the sign advising of no cell phones and pictures, and then by the army guys advising to stay on the main road only. Is anyone tired of the news? We finally went out, Is anyone tired of the news? We finally went out, after a few days of doing nothing, for a hike along the 3.5-mile Cliff Walk yesterday. There couldn’t be virus at the seashore, and we all need to breathe in some fresh air. Our little ones jumped all the way in excitement, and learned some new skills (eg. climbing trees). The other day, we did a geography lesson about countries and regions of the world. It’s always fun to see on the map the various parts of the world we’ve visited through our travels. . As Michael Franti says, “Bad sh*t happens, but g As Michael Franti says, “Bad sh*t happens, but good sh*t happens too.” . I’ve said this many times before, but 2020 has been just plain awful! Wildfires in Australia (remember that?), a global pandemic, economic recession, the murders of Black Americans, wildfires in western USA, and hurricanes in eastern USA. Can’t we just get a break already? . But within the bad, there are good things too. Families are connecting more, we are caring more about the environment, communities are stepping up to support Black Lives Matter, people are realizing there are ways to work and learn that don’t require being physically locked in one location. . Mind you, I’m not prescribing an “always look on the bright side of things” mentality. That only serves to dismiss the real, actual hurt that people are experiencing. But I am encouraging people to realize that good things do exist, in conjunction with the bad things. . Today, let’s acknowledge the good that came from this year. Let’s (virtually) hug our friends and families and share our gratitude for what this year has brought us. . For our family personally, this year brought us a new business, a new job, and an opportunity to spend time with our extended family, after being away for two years. . What has 2020 brought for you? The fires in the west are destroying communities a The fires in the west are destroying communities and causing poor air quality all over California, Oregon, and Washington states. . This pic is from Diablo Lake at North Cascades National Park, where we spent this past weekend camping. While it was nice to spend time in the outdoors, it was a shame we couldn’t experience the full beauty of the park. . Since coming back from our camping trip, we’ve been spending time indoors, trying to keep away from the smoke. It’s been hazy and grey all week! . There’s just some moments in life that you will There’s just some moments in life that you will never forget. They stay with you forever and become a defining moment. Our trek to Machu Picchu was just that. . When we arrived to the top it was like all our travels had been leading us here. Everything that we had done to get to this point as a family over the last two years was actualized in the sheer magnitude of experiencing this wonder. Following our dreams had truly led us here, a place I never thought we would be able to visit as a family. . We left Machu Picchu surer than ever that this is life we were meant lead as a family.
