I love a cuppa, and so do the Moroccans. It’s not I love a cuppa, and so do the Moroccans. It’s not just the drinking of tea that’s special, it’s the making of it too. I always thought Moroccan tea was mint, but it’s actually green tea with fresh mint leaves added. But, do you know why the tea is always poured this way? Clue, one reason is directly linked to the desert. 🐪 I’m off to put the kettle on. I’m usually an independent traveller, but I 100% recommend a guide and driver in Morocco. 🇲🇦 I’ve done both, but finding a great company to look after you is incredible. So thank you @morocco_colourful_tours I did a similar route 10+ years ago as a self-drive, but going with a local guide this time meant we saw more of the real stuff—quiet places we would have never found on our own, proper introductions to locals we would never have met without Amar, and context of everything we saw. Aït Ben Haddou — what a place! @morocco_colourful_ Aït Ben Haddou — what a place! @morocco_colourful_tours We loved our visit to Aït Ben Haddou and arrived before the influx of tourists flooded the small streets. Amar shared so many stories about its history and how it’s been used as a backdrop for films like Gladiator. But long before Hollywood arrived, this was a real fortified city and home to generations of families who lived and traded within its mud-brick walls. Only a handful of families live here now. Most have built modern homes just across the river, but you can still feel the spirit of the old city in the narrow lanes. Being a bit of a property lover I loved seeing how the homes had been built from a simple clay-and-straw mix called kla’a, which has to be reapplied regularly because each rainfall slowly washes it away. It’s a living piece of history, still holding on, although the damage is apparent. My favourite nugget from the day was watching an artist create a beautiful little picture using secret ink, which appears when the paper is burnt.
