One thing you should know about our family is that One thing you should know about our family is that we are HUGE UNC fans! Mike went to graduate school there and I commuted to Chapel Hill just about every weekend for two years from my consulting job. You can’t spend any time in Chapel HIll and not become a devoted basketball fan! 🏀And naturally, we have raised our kids to bleed Carolina blue: they’ve always worn the gear, watched all the basketball games, fly the flag on game day, and have made multiple trips across the country to visit the campus. In 2016, we decided to follow the team to Maui for the Maui Invitational. 🌺🌴The tournament is held over Thanksgiving week every year in Lahaina, but UNC attends only every 4th year. That year, UNC won the entire tournament and we were there for every game! It was an amazing way to kick off the college basketball season. We decided from that point on, we would spend every 4th Thanksgiving on Maui cheering for the Tar Heels. 2020 is the year we were supposed to go back to Maui. The tournament wasn’t canceled, but it was moved to Asheville, NC and we decided not to go. It’s a bummer to miss out this year, but we’ll be cheering them on from home with our flag flying proud. Go Heels! Maui 2024!🌈

STAYCATION DONE! . . ...and just like that it’s STAYCATION DONE! . . ...and just like that it’s all done...our first staycation in a long time and our first holiday post COVID-19. If I have to give you one piece of advice it would be to research research research where you’re going. There are still lots of places not open yet or running at a very reduced service. It’s a shame because I always loved a little bit of the element of surprise when going on holiday; hoping I’d uncover a gem when we got there. However in this new world it’s a little difficult. For example, some restaurants remain closed, are offering a different menu or are only allowing half the number of diners in than they normally would. We also found a number attractions are remaining closed until mid-August while they finalise arrangements. MONDAY MONDAY . . It comes round so quickly doesn’t it?!?! This week is a busy one for us, homeschooling continues as we prepare for my little boy’s 7th birthday! He had wanted a Pokemon bouncy castle party with his friends, but sadly that won’t be able to go ahead now. We have some surprises planned for him, which I hope he’ll enjoy just as much. . . This week we will hopefully hear confirmation of the plans for the “air bridges” enabling us to travel abroad. What do you think? Will it happen? Would you travel if you could? I have to be honest and say I’m not convinced...as much as I would love to hop on a plane, I think there are still too many risks - am I wrong? I’d love to know what you think.... . . We are on the second day of lockdown in Nepal. We We are on the second day of lockdown in Nepal. We were thinking about staying here then, before we knew it, the country was on lockdown and all flights were suspended so the decision was taken out of our hands. I feel good about being here. We are in a very welcoming, family run hotel who have said they will look after us for as long as we are here. They cook for us, we have a balcony, a roof terrace and a small garden, we can leave to get food and medicine and we have Internet, phew! One of the biggest reasons I’m happy we’re here is that it’s not that much of a change for Honor. Yes, she knows we can’t go out for walks or play dates (there is another British family with two boys Honor’s age riding this thing out in a hotel over the road from us), but being together as a family of three, living in a small space, in a hotel, FaceTiming grandma and grandad and homeschooling are very normal to her. I couldn’t imagine the heart ache she would have experienced if we had returned to the UK and then had to tell her she couldn’t see anyone or play with her friends. Things are changing quickly... only a few days ago Things are changing quickly... only a few days ago we were happy with the prospect of staying in Nepal for the next two, three months? But then came the realisation that international travel is going to be so adversely affected that those three months could turn into six, maybe even a year. I love dal baht, but not that much!!! We have been taking photos in the park and at a wild flowers field we found near home since we were allowed to go out for limited walks. Since then we have noticed things that never noticed before. The stillness of the mornings, the vivid colours of the flowers and the horizon clear and crisp. We have noticed the variation in size and colours of the flowers, the beautiful shape of the clouds in the afternoons, and the music coming from the wind while you walk. This is the beauty of our nature that we got to protect. Please be mindful of where you leave your trash as leaving abandoned plastic on the floor generates toxic effects. We always take our trash with us home if there is no any trash bins near us. Have a great weekend everyone😉. . . . 🌟- Mirando la vida desde una nueva perspectiva. Hemos estado haciendo fotos en el parque y en un campo de flores silvestres que encontramos cerca de casa, desde qué nos permitieron salir a dar paseos. Desde entonces hemos notado cosas qué nunca antes habíamos notado. La tranquilidad de las mañanas, los colores vivos de las flores y el horizonte claro y nítido. Hemos notado la variación en el tamaño y los colores de las flores, la hermosa forma de las nubes en las tardes y la música que te toca el viento mientras caminas. Esta es la belleza de nuestra naturaleza qué tenemos que proteger. Debemos ser cuidadosos, en dónde dejamos la basura, ya qué; dejar el plástico tirado en el suelo genera efectos tóxicos. The highlight of our day but not without a bit of The highlight of our day but not without a bit of effort... We arrived at More London around 12:30pm and it wasn't working. 😬 One of the mums who were around told me that it’s usually closed from 12pm to 2pm! . . The kids disappointment was so big that we decided to wait and hope for the best! Lucky that we usually have some things in the car: mats, colouring book and pens. They managed to entertain themselves in the shade for one hour and a half until the BIG moment. At 2pm on the dot they were back again and it sounded like the beginning of a gig... all the kids who were patiently waiting stood up and ran like crazy towards the fountains! OCEAN THERAPY (well, technically gulf rather than OCEAN THERAPY (well, technically gulf rather than ocean, but same effect). We have been debating on whether to venture out on a road trip, just to get some mental break (mostly to help my sanity 😂), but didn't want to plan anything knowing how quickly things tend to change nowadays. Our other criteria was a place we can get to in a day.  For those of you who may not be very familiar with American Midwest, that really limited the options.  Initially, we were thinking of Hilton Head, since we enjoyed it few years back.  But apparently it's a pretty popular place this summer and everything is sold out if you wait until last minute.  So instead, we ended up on Navarre Beach (that is on Florida panhandle, for those geography lovers out there 😀). 15 hours in the car and here we are.  First day in (and judging by the happy emojis), we're happy with our decision. #anbatravels2020 #roadtripusa #roadtripwithkids #longdrives #exploringfamily #bringthekids #beachview #wavescrashing #gulfshores #floridapanhandle #panhandle #florida #usatravel #beachvacation #navarrebeach #lifeisbetteratthebeach #beach #ouradventures #ourtribetravels #roadtrip2020 #familyadventure

TRAVEL DURING PANDEMIC. After living in our person TRAVEL DURING PANDEMIC. After living in our personal bubble for 3 months, it felt very weird to get on the road. We also had doubts on how traveling during pandemic would be, especially to the state with increasing number of cases. If you're wondering too, here are our observations of Navarre Beach, Florida (broken out in 2 sections cause of space limit). The biggest one - social distancing and masks tend to disappear as you get further South. Coming from Illinois that has been hit pretty hard and where masks are pretty much mandatory, it's very noticeable. Drive - Rest areas are open and seem to be a bit more of a mix between people in masks and without.  Can't say the same about gas stations. We had to use bathrooms in Tennessee and Kentucky (the rest areas at Tennessee entrance coming from North were under construction) and were the only ones in masks, including the workers.  We didn't get the "you're crazy" looks either though. 😀 Beach - Plenty of people, but still enough space for everyone to keep the distance unless you want to lounge right in front of the water - that gets crowded. Overall most people don't keep the 6 feet when setting their own umbrellas, few do.  But again, still plenty of space to distance yourself, especially further down the beach, away from high rises and hotels. Water - We figured out the mystery we attributed to weekend influx when we saw a traffic jam leaving the beach on Saturday night as we were driving in vs noone, but us, in the water and few people on the beach on Sunday.  It wasn't the weekend at all, it was the waves and seaweed 😂 With calm and clean waters on other days, it definitely got more crowded.  But open water is open water and we still were able to swim without anyone by our side. BTW, not covid related, super calm and crystal clear waters are more of a rarity there, I guess, but we were lucky to enjoy it several mornings/early afternoons. Restaurants and stores are to come next.
