I mentioned on stories a couple of days ago that weโ€™ve decided to cancel our holiday overseas and opt for a staycation instead. As much as I would love to have spent two weeks sunning myself in St Lucia, we felt it was becoming more and more uncertain as to whether we would actually get there and really dampening our spirits of getting excited about it. Are you a credit card user or do you prefer to use Are you a credit card user or do you prefer to use cash? Up until recently we had one credit card but tended to spend on a cash basis; however, after having my eyes opened by several travel hackers here on IG I am rethinking how we do things. This past month Matt added a second credit card, the American Express Platinum, and in doing so it actually saved us money! Here's how: 1. This card does have an annual fee of $550; however, due to Matt's Active Duty status this fee is waived under the Servicemembers' Civil Relief Act. 2. The AMEX card comes with a bunch of benefits but the one that saved us money this month was the $30 PayPal credit (from Jan - Jun.) We linked the AMEX card to our PayPal account and made a BUDGETED purchase to a vendor that takes PayPal. To get the credit we simply selected the PayPal payment option & approximately 7 days later, our AMEX account was credited with $30! 3. Lastly we linked our Rakuten account to American Express, so instead of getting cash back we now earn AMEX points. Matt has been saving for some golf clubs which he was able to purchase this month, we shopped through the Rakuten portal and scored 1,500 points on top of the points from using the AMEX card. Donโ€™t forget to pay your card off in full each month! EXPENSIVE DESTINATIONS ON A FAMILY GAP YEAR BUDGET EXPENSIVE DESTINATIONS ON A FAMILY GAP YEAR BUDGET - Number 1: London๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง Lots of people liked our recent posts on budget-friendly family gap year travel, so we thought weโ€™d turn it around and talk about some of the super expensive places weโ€™ve visited - and how weโ€™ve done it on a budget ๐Ÿ’ฐ First up is London, which you might think is way out of a family gap year budget, but here are some tips on how weโ€™ve done it in a budget-friendly way. Time your visit: If youโ€™re only coming for a few days, then try to visit mid-week rather than the weekends, as youโ€™ll find accommodation can be more reasonable. Accommodation: we have had excellent stays all over the UK at Premier Inn for super budget prices. In London we stayed at the newish one up at Wembley back in 2019 and paid ยฃ138 (or ยฃ34.50 per night) for 4 nights for a family room. Thatโ€™s incredible value! We bought it in a sale, so subscribe to their mailing list to get notified when theyโ€™re on. Visit all the free attractions: London has so many attractions that can be done for FREE and theyโ€™re perfect for families. You can spend days seeing landmarks, museums and locations and just paying for your transport to get around. Ideas include Tower Bridge, London Bridge, Borough Markets, Buckingham Palace (looking through the gates), Hyde Park, Covent Garden, British Museum, Natural History Museum, Piccadilly Circus, wandering through Harrods, Hamleys Toy Store, Leicester Square, Westminster and Big Benโ€ฆyour kids will love walking through the real-life Monopoly game and all the places theyโ€™ve seen in movies. We always choose one or two places to pay to go in and everything else involves free attractions. Eat out sparingly: Restaurants can eat up your budget very quickly, so we tended to do a one night out/one night in routine. We would eat out at a pub or restaurant one night, then get food from the supermarket and take back to our room every second night. Just because it is OUR ideal vision of life and our adventures souls that wants to be satisfied, doesnโ€™t automatically mean it is his too. - Before Otis came into our world we always said, โ€œno doubt, we will travel with our baby too, someday...โ€ And there he is, this tiny fragile human being, that craves all of you, that depends on you and your decisions๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿฝ And you start rethinking your ideal way of living. ๐Ÿ’†๐Ÿฝโ€โ™‚๏ธ - After we took this step, we found the answer to this question for us. Even though it is unbelievable stressful on some days and we think there just canโ€™t be any energy left in our bodies, we feel relieved and happy. โ˜€๏ธ These crazy days also happen if you buy a house in an โ€œoh so pretty neighborhoodโ€, the same one you may grew up yourself ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿฝโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ - And if we feel happiness, he does too. When we are relaxed, he is too. We figured, there is no way, we are giving up our decision of VREEdome. Hands up if you love a model village ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ? I donโ€™t know what it is about them but I find them so charming and they transport you into such an idyllic way of living. bekonscotofficial certainly stole one of the top spots of a local (ish) day out for us. You could easily spend a couple of hours there wandering through the different scenes and spotting the meticulous attention to detail and a ride on the miniature train is an absolute must ๐Ÿš‚. Today as part of our Asian geography unit study, we watched a video on Israel (weโ€™re going by the UN definition of Asia). It led us to discussing the current violence happening in the Gaza Strip. Itโ€™s not always easy for me to take an objective approach when it comes to these kinds of issues. My heart will always side with groups who I think are being unjustly treated. But as parents, we also need to encourage our children to see both sides of the issue. Finding sources of information that are balanced and impartial is so important. We use YouTube a lot for our learning, and one of our favorite channels is geographynow_official. Thanks, Paul and team for making such informative and thoughtful videos! Yesterday, the little one had a random day off sch Yesterday, the little one had a random day off school. We had been planning for WEEKS to go to the beach and get a cake pop from Starbucks.โ โ  โ โ  Well, Florida ruined our plans and it rained ALL DAY LONG. We still had fun going to lunch and having a little shopping spree at Five Below. Plus, the kid had mac and cheese for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.โ โ  โ โ  Then, tucking her in last night, she told me she was sad because we forgot the cake pop.โ โ  โ โ  I CANNOT BELIEVE WE FORGOT THE CAKE POP!!!!!โ โ  โ โ  ............. so Iโ€™m letting her skip school today. Thinking about a trip to Hokkaido? Donโ€™t cross o Thinking about a trip to Hokkaido? Donโ€™t cross out a short visit to Hakodate. Rather underrated; however, it oozes charm, from cobblestone streets, to antique street signs. Save this post for later for our top places to visit in Hakodate. ๐Ÿš„ For those in Aomori, grab a Shinkansen from Hachinohe directly up to Shin-Hakodate. Then itโ€™s just a short local train ride to Hakodate. Eden (11) fully navigated us from Misawa to Hakodate, super easy! Donโ€™t forget to grab some waffles from hakodate_snaffles before you exit the train station! ๐Ÿจ We stayed at Laโ€™gent Stay Hakodate Ekimae, a really convenient location, just a 2 minute walk from station. ๐Ÿฆ‘ Visit the Morning Market and catch a squid which theyโ€™ll chop up into sashimi! The kids loved this, especially eating the tentacles which were still moving ๐Ÿคฃ Hakodate is known for squid and you can find it everywhere in anything, from crackers to pizza! ๐Ÿš‹ A ride on the street cars is a must. Save all your ยฅ10 coins, theyโ€™ll be needed! If itโ€™s your first time, just remember to board through the rear door, and exit at the front (you pay upon exiting.) ๐ŸฅŸ Daimon Yokocho is a gem of a street housing small stalls selling a variety of Japanese street foods & beverages. Donโ€™t miss the squid gyoza. We visited twice it was that good! โ›ช๏ธ We were surprised to learn that there is a Russian Orthodox Church in Hakodate. Japanโ€™s first Orthodox cathedral. Not far from the church is a small Russian tea and gift shop worth checking out. ๐Ÿงฑ Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse is a quaint shopping mall in a 1869 warehouse complex. Lots of gift shops and restaurants. ๐Ÿป Hakodate Beer Hall, located in the Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse, has incredible cheese fondue as well as some delicious local brewed beers. One thing we didnโ€™t make it to which Iโ€™m super bummed about was the natural open-air bath in the sea! Unlike other onsens you will need your swimsuit here as itโ€™s a mixed bath. Mizunashi kaihin onsen. If you head to Hakodate, what would be top of your list to do? Eat squid thatโ€™s still moving or relax in a hot spring in the sea?

First van trip of 2021. We've had a fantastic 3 ni First van trip of 2021. We've had a fantastic 3 nights in Shropshire. The weather was at least dry and sunny Saturday and Sunday but it could have done with being a bit warmer! . We had some lovely walks which I'll share in some posts coming soon. The Shropshire hills are stunning and I feel like we barely scratched the surface. It's under 2 hours away so I know we'll be back. . NEXT ON #BONGOCONVOS ... ๐ŸŽ™๏ธ Trekking to Ever NEXT ON #BONGOCONVOS ... ๐ŸŽ™๏ธ Trekking to Everest Base Camp with kids ๐Ÿ•— WED 12TH MAY (1PM GMT) with ultimate family adventurer, Julie, from clanwander Back in 2012 (pre-kids), Jay and I did the 15 day trek to Everest Base Camp (5364m) in #Nepal from Lukla. It was seriously tough going and the altitude really got to me. We made it! But I'm not sure I could do it again. So when I heard that Julie and her family clanwander did it with her kids aged 4 and 9 - well I just had to get them on Bongo Convos to hear more and share their incredible story with you all! They spent months in the Himalayas (which will definitely be how they coped with the altitude better), but were stuck there for lockdown ๐Ÿ˜ณ.
