Just look at the colour of this sea! We had an amazing few days on Iona, swimming in the sea every day!

We stayed at the lovely ionapods which are heated and very conveniently located at the North of the island to get to the beaches, 5 minutes walk from the abbey and right below Dun I, the highest point on Iona.

I didn’t realise how beautiful Iona was until we arrived. But it definitely captured our hearts and we’ll be back one day! 💕

Let’s just forget about the ferry cancellation on the way back and a rather annoying long detour to get home! We made it and I’m pleased that I feel much more capable of taking the kids away on my own. I think that was the first time I’ve driven onto the ferry myself (aside the tiny one to Gigha!).

Which Scottish island would you like to visit?

King Alfred’s Tower was completed in 1779, damaged by a plane crash in 1944 and rebuilt in the 1980s.

Definitely a interesting place to sit with a picnic and let the kids run wild.

Give me a van amongst the gum trees 🌿🎶 💕For almost two weeks we’ve been roaming around in Yolo our Apollo, and I feel like I’ve finally got everything in its place and we’ve settled in 🎉. It’s so easy! I mean, I have to cook and do laundry and connect cables and grey water hoses AND empty the toilet but hey, apparently that’s the reality of #vanlife 🤣🤣 What I Iove the most is: 👍🏻being able to move whenever we want to and that everything comes with us - like today, instead of having lunch and then doing the White Sands Walk along the beaches here in Jervis Bay, we just drove there and made lunch and ate it in the bush before we wandered the beaches. Very cool!! 👍🏻The van is COSY! We have heating and it’s so warm and the bed is comfy too (you guys know my back and joints are old-lady-painful and they’ve been great this trip). 👍🏻I filled up the van completely with diesel a few days ago after a week and a half of driving and it cost $67 - nice surprise!! 👍🏻Caravan parks are fun - we’ve met some really nice people... but someone also had a go at me for my slow van parking skills which I believe are bloody good so 🤷🏻‍♀️🤣🤣 Dont worry, I snapped back hahah. 👍🏻The fridge is keeping my bubbles SUPER COLD. #important

We’re heading west soon - Emmie now has a fibreglass cast but can’t do much with it - kayaking and water sports are banned so we are going inland. Omg EXCITED! Let us know if you’re around Bathurst, Dubbo, Orange, Canowindra, Cowra or anywhere nearby! 😍😍😍 apollomotorhomeholidays #Apollopartner

NUMBER 7 is Namibia 🇳🇦 (the boys were 3 and 4 years old)

To think that we only decided to go to Namibia at the very last minute (as in the night before), seems crazy now. We were on our big overlanding trip through Southern Africa and camping for the night in Zambia, close to the Botswana and Namibia border, getting ready to cross the border into Bots.

But news of washed out roads in Botswana made us change our plans. We had been on the road for over 2 months, and had had enough of bad roads.

So to Namibia we went, and I swear our tyres were singing when they sailed along the fresh tarmac!

For anyone who asks me where to take kids on their first African adventure, Namibia is always my answer. I’ll put a swipe up in stories later for a blog post I wrote as to why.

But for the boys, Namibia was more than the incredible and easy wildlife spotting on safari. There are hundreds of stinky seals to see, shipwrecks and abandoned mines to explore, huge crimson sand dunes to run down. Plus a German bakery in every town! And the roads are much easier for self driving - though be warned, the distances are huge!

What are your plans for the weekend? We've booked a last minute camping trip. Only an hour from home and in an area we have visited before. We're really looking forward to getting back in the van, it's not going to be as exciting as the Netherlands but the weather looks good and we're doing a walk tomorrow we did a couple of years back and loved.

Have a great weekend whatever you're doing! Not jealous at all of those of you at family festivals! Honest. ❤️

🌟 Campervan Essentials 🌟

Campervanning looks very different for many people - some prefer a little more luxury, while others are happy with very minimal equipment. I would like to think that we sit somewhere in between those extremes and pride ourselves on only buying and storing things in the van that we consider are essential for making life easier on the road as a family.

🌟➡️ NEW on the BLOG - Our Campervan Essentials! (Link in bio) All recommendations are items we have tried and tested over a considerable period of time, organised within the format of answering questions we have been asked recently.
▪️How can you keep your van clean and tidy on the road?
▪️How do you prepare meals when you are travelling?
▪️How do you manage to travel with children and a dog?
▪️How do you manage to fit everything that you need into such a small space?
▪️What items have you found really useful that I might not have thought of?
▪️What items do you find really useful when travelling with children?

If you could only choose THREE essentials in your campervan, what would they be?

NUMBER 10 is TANZANIA 🇹🇿 - the boys were 2 and 4 years old.

I'll be honest, Tanzania wouldn't be in my top ten. This is the hardest country we've travelled with the boys. We were self driving from South Africa in a #landroverdefender and on a budget - Tanzania is more geared towards high end tourism and organised tours. Safaris are extortionately expensive compared to Southern African countries, the police road checks were the most aggressive we have experienced, and we had to deal with unexpected monsoonal rains and washed out roads.

But the boys remember:

🇹🇿 the epic wildlife encounters at the quieter (and cheaper) parks we visited - mating lions close to our Land Rover, and being the only witnesses to hundreds of elephants at a watering hole
🇹🇿 a snow capped Mt Kilimanjaro
🇹🇿 the awesome hospitality at utengulecoffeelodge where we camped on a helipad with incredible sunset views for a week.

Tanzania was the most challenging country for independent travel, but totally worth it.

Hello 👋 We've had so many new followers since we started travelling again, so I thought I'd do a little re-introduction as it's been a looooooooong while since the last time I did this 😘

🚐 I'm Jenny, Mum of the Lynn family. I work as a travel blogger (yes, that is actually a real job that earns you money 😜) - I love the flexibility it provides me around our family and the travel opportunities it brings.

🚐 With Jay (hubby) and our two boys (Arthur 7, Ezra 6) we live in the Peak District 🇬🇧. I also run peakdistrictkids - which has become the go-to website for families exploring the UK's oldest national park 🥾 and the website receives over 180k page views per month.

🚐 As a family we love epic adventures. We have lived in India, trekked the Himalayas, and traversed Africa in a Land Rover.

🚐 We jumped on the pandemic VAN-waggon in June '20 and bought our Mazda Bongo camper from eBay for £7k. We were supposed to be taking a family gap year and travelling overland from London to Sydney last year - a trip Jay and I did back in 2007 🙄. But we absolutely love our Bongo; he's part of the family now 🥰.

🚐 We are all Aussie citizens as Jay and I used to live in Sydney. The boys have never even visited, and it's currently the top country they want to travel to. One day...

🚐 I've never liked sea food. And when I decided to become vegetarian over three years ago, it was a huge relief to just say to people that I'm vegetarian, rather than explain I don't like sea food 🙈. Although I still sometimes eat the boys left over fish fingers 🤷‍♀️.

🚐 Oh and we're currently spending the summer travelling around France in our Bongo and having the best time ever 🥰🇫🇷.

Right, I think that's enough waffling on about myself 🤣.

Big hugs,
Jenny x

I was recently asked what was the toughest situation we had traveling during covid. There was one missed flight and a few almost missed flights, however getting lockdown in Colombia was definitely the biggest challenge.

We were out to breakfast on a Saturday morning in what we thought was just a very, very popular spot. The food took over two hours to receive and the place was body to body. When we finished our meal, the place cleared out into a ghost town, both the restaurants and the streets.

Not knowing anything that was happening, we headed for a walk on the beach only to be abruptly turned around, and told we immediately needed to return to our indoor accommodations until 5am the following day.

That weekend Colombia issued a mandatory lockdown from noon-5am on Sat and Sunday. And this isn’t a US kind of lockdown where you can go out and get groceries or walk around, this was OG Italy style where you can’t leave your home. I know this is also shocking, but Colombia also doesn’t offer peapod or Amazon fresh, so you are kind of stuck with what you have in your fridge.

Thank goodness we got groceries the night prior (especially lots of drinking water) but full lockdown was extremely rough, and we couldn’t find ANY information online about how long this was planning to last. (And I speak good enough Spanish to translate any local news)

We worked the system and the following day at 10am we headed to the local Hilton hotel, where we were confined to property but were allowed to use the pools and restaurants as we pleased. Best investment of $90 of our entire trip!

Monday morning life returned to normal in Cartagena, only to be boarded up again Tuesday afternoon due to government protests and riots.

We were never scared and understood that situations like these are the risk you take when traveling during covid. With that being said, our next location was Medellin and the rioting was worst there and more lockdowns were predicted on the horizon.

As much as we loved the time we had in Colombia, we cut our losses, burned our tickets to our next destinations and headed home for a quick regroup before heading to Europe.

The boys had their first ever surf lesson today with manusurf_school_camp at Longeville-sur-Mer! An hour lesson costs €35 per person and they have English-speaking instructors.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
There were five kids in the lesson. They started by playing 'Musical surf boards' (surf boards instead of chairs on the sand 😉) and by the end of the lesson, Arthur was managing to ride a wave standing up for a few seconds! Ez was laughing throughout and preferred the boogie-board technique 😜⁣⁣

They had so much fun that we've booked them in for another session tomorrow 🤙🏄⁣⁣

NUMBER 1 is Malawi 🇲🇼 (the boys were 2 and 4 years old)

Yes, Malawi! (Not the UK as a lot of your had guessed 😜).

This really surprised me. Not that it should surprise me - Malawi packs a lot into its relatively small landmass; majestic mountains, white-crescent beaches fringing the lake, and intimate big five safari experiences. Plus, the people are so genuinely lovely - there’s a reason it’s called ‘the warm heart of Africa’.

We absolutely LOVED our time in Malawi as part of our 101 days overlanding Africa.

However, in the interests of full disclosure, I have to let you know that Ez played a Malawian child in this year's nativity play, and the boys were learning about Malawian Christmas traditions in school last term 🖤♥️💚. I asked them if this affected their decision at all, and it was a firm no 😉.

Whether this did influence their decision or not, it’s made me realise that it’s important to keep learning and talking about the places we’ve travelled. It’s this that keeps the memories alive and deepens their affinity with a destination, at a time when world has shut down.

Anyways, I hope you’ve enjoyed hearing the boys' top 10 countries! It was a fun lockdown exercise and I’ve actually learnt a lot from it xx

This is ten-year-old Georgi. She wears this elephant shirt until I force her to put it in the hamper. She writes me a “love note” each night before bed because a simple goodnight kiss will not suffice and she must express her enormous heart in words. She knows what she wants and she goes after it - hitting a mountain bike jump at full force to get both wheels in the air, searching craigslist for a violin she can afford to kickstart her musical passion, and never giving up on a hard project at the climbing gym. In a few days she turns eleven and I’m so freaking proud of her, but gosh her ten-year-old version is going to be pretty hard to beat.

All bongos need a hammock. 🙌

We bought this hammock from a decathlonindia when we lived in Bangalore a few years ago. It's been all over India, then on our travels through Africa, and now it is packed away in our #mazdabongo for whenever there's a handy tree near our pitch.

I've had a few people ask how we attach the hammock to our camper. Bongos tend to have three strong hooks under the AFT on the sliding door side. I've read somewhere that there hooks are for a specific bongo awning 🤷‍♀️, but for us they work perfectly for the hammock 👌.

So this is 'winter' in Spain ☀️ It's perfect hiking weather 👌🥾

Huge thanks to greengirlgetaways for telling me about the superb coastal footpath from Vilanova to Sitges. We were planning to go to Sitges today, but had no idea about the walking route until I saw her message this morning!

It's 8km along fantastic rocky cliffs and sandy coves with a regular train whizzing past on the other side.

And once we arrived in Sitges - WOWSERS! What a stunner of a town.

A train and bus then brought us back to our campsite, where the boys STILL had energy for the jumping pillow 😳. Arthur's fitbit (Xmas pressie) has totalled 29,296 steps today 🤪.

Oh Crete, you are pretty. We have had a chilled out start to our two weeks here, but made time for a day exploring Chania with its Venetian harbour and fortress, and gorgeous old town - lots of golden alleys, flower draped courtyards and cafe lined pedestrian streets.

Among that, there were some unusual sights too - a church with a minaret, courtesy of Crete's often tumultuous history, a synagogue and a small pink roofed mosque that now houses art exhibitions. At the old Venetian fortress, the Greek flag was first flown here as a symbol of the island becoming part of the country.

You can walk out to this lighthouse too - still on my list when we head back to Chania for a boat trip, as the sun was searingly hot when we first visited. For now, we settled ourselves at a waterfront table, ordered up seafood and souvlaki and soaked up the views as the fans whirred.

We saved the BEST till last in Granada😊 Our last day involved a visit to the alhambra and I can now see why this place is on so many peoples bucketlist. It really is something special.

Below I have included our top 5 tips to make your visit as enjoyable and stress free as possible, especially when you have the kids in tow during the summer months 🥵

⭐️ Book tickets a couple of weeks in advance. If not expect a long queue and the possibility of being turned away.

⭐️ Be mindful when booking that you will choose the exact half hour that you can enter nasrid palace. We booked ours on a Spanish site and thought this was the time we could enter the alhambra. We turned up to nasrid palace 2 hours late and were told we could not enter. Thankfully perseverance paid off and someone allowed us in.

⭐️ Take the C3 bus and leave your car behind. Granada
has a great bus service. For 1.2 euros you get a
ride up the hill almost to the front entrance. You catch
this right behind the statue of Isabella and Columbus.

⭐️ don’t forget your ID they won’t let you in without a passport or driving licence. We also made this mistake 🙈 thankfully we had a picture on our phones of our driving license that was excepted.

⭐️ after visiting the Alhambra go for lunch at restaurant jardin Alberto. We had the best meal of our trip here. You will need to book in advance as it gets very busy
