My FB memories are killing me at the mo 😭. This one popped up this morning of Ez in #Bangkok getting stuck into some noodles. He must be 16 months old here 💚.⁣⁣

Anyways, hope everyone is doing ok? I've been a bit quiet on this account as I've been focusing on peakdistrictkids, closer to home, and we've barely been out in the #Bongo (except for school runs 🤷‍♀️)...⁣⁣

And we had the weirdest realisation this week... something happened that was totally foreign to us... Jay has annual leave days outstanding for this year that he needs to take 🤣. That has NEVER happened to us in the 20 years we've been together. 😱⁣⁣

Hello 👋 We've had so many new followers since we started travelling again, so I thought I'd do a little re-introduction as it's been a looooooooong while since the last time I did this 😘

🚐 I'm Jenny, Mum of the Lynn family. I work as a travel blogger (yes, that is actually a real job that earns you money 😜) - I love the flexibility it provides me around our family and the travel opportunities it brings.

🚐 With Jay (hubby) and our two boys (Arthur 7, Ezra 6) we live in the Peak District 🇬🇧. I also run peakdistrictkids - which has become the go-to website for families exploring the UK's oldest national park 🥾 and the website receives over 180k page views per month.

🚐 As a family we love epic adventures. We have lived in India, trekked the Himalayas, and traversed Africa in a Land Rover.

🚐 We jumped on the pandemic VAN-waggon in June '20 and bought our Mazda Bongo camper from eBay for £7k. We were supposed to be taking a family gap year and travelling overland from London to Sydney last year - a trip Jay and I did back in 2007 🙄. But we absolutely love our Bongo; he's part of the family now 🥰.

🚐 We are all Aussie citizens as Jay and I used to live in Sydney. The boys have never even visited, and it's currently the top country they want to travel to. One day...

🚐 I've never liked sea food. And when I decided to become vegetarian over three years ago, it was a huge relief to just say to people that I'm vegetarian, rather than explain I don't like sea food 🙈. Although I still sometimes eat the boys left over fish fingers 🤷‍♀️.

🚐 Oh and we're currently spending the summer travelling around France in our Bongo and having the best time ever 🥰🇫🇷.

Right, I think that's enough waffling on about myself 🤣.

At most sights in Luxor there will be a guardian in attendance, ready to escort you around, point out some of the most famous elements of the site and take a few pictures for you.
✨
Some people find the guardians intrusive and feel frustrated when they ask for bakshish but we find most of these men (they're all men) to be helpful and kind, especially to our children.
✨
Our advice is to carry some small change (in Egyptian pounds) and incorporate that into your budget rather than allowing yourself to feel bothered or resentful by something you can't really avoid.
✨
Give your energy instead to marveling at the incredible history you're standing within.
✨
Entry to the Memorial Temple of Seti I is 60 Egyptian pounds for adults, 30 for kids 6 and up and free for kids 5 and under. Tickets can be purchased from the Antiquities Ticket Office.

SURF'S UP! 🏄⁣⁣

The boys had their first ever surf lesson today with manusurf_school_camp at Longeville-sur-Mer! An hour lesson costs €35 per person and they have English-speaking instructors.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
There were five kids in the lesson. They started by playing 'Musical surf boards' (surf boards instead of chairs on the sand 😉) and by the end of the lesson, Arthur was managing to ride a wave standing up for a few seconds! Ez was laughing throughout and preferred the boogie-board technique 😜⁣⁣

They had so much fun that we've booked them in for another session tomorrow 🤙🏄⁣⁣

Docklands, Melbourne

Docklands was a wetlands area consisting of a large salt lake and a giant swamp (known as West Melbourne Swamp) at the mouth of the Moonee Ponds Creek.

In the 1880s it became a bustling dock area as part of the Port of Melbourne, with an extensive network of wharfs, heavy rail infrastructure and light industry.

During the wars, Victoria Dock was used as the main port for naval vessels and most of the Victorian troops returned from both wars to the docks.

Adorned with art sculptures and apartment buildings, Docklands is a contemporary waterfront dining, retail and entertainment hub.

AD | You see the little wooden hut to the right of this photo? That's our own personal washblock that comes with our pitch!

We've got a shower, loo, kitchen sink, and a big fridge/freezer ALL TO OURSELVES! The height of bongo luxury 🙌How cool is that?! I've only ever come across pitches like this in Namibia.

We're now in Roussillon on the south coast. This is another #eurocampindependent site, but very different to the last one - this place is HUGE with so much going on! We generally lean towards smaller sites, but over the years we've tried a couple of bigger sites out and they've always been a huge success - mostly because the boys love the onsite waterparks! 💦

Do you ever feel this way? I often feel so tiny after time in the forest, realizing how minuscule our place on this earth really is, but what massive damage we have done. ⁣

Although, I get the point of this quote.. mentally, my heart is full and my mind is clear after time in nature.⁣

But this is me with poetry.. I’ve never been so great with it because I am very literal. However, I am learning...Cian and I have started a new homeschool ritual of Poetry Teatime. It’s been a fun way to get out of my comfort zone and open up new forms of reading for Cian. ⁣
⁣
I never even knew that he had an interest in poems, but he’s really taken to it. I bought a few books for kids, but what he enjoys more are the classic poets. So many of their writings focus on nature, which is where his love is as well. He’s even begun nature journaling every time we go somewhere - and it’s always a poem. ⁣

Don’t mind me, I’m just over here adoring what homeschool has brought to us! ⁣

Every day this child surprises me with his interest in things, his love of learning and excitement to explore all that the world has on offer. ❤️⁣

Can you spot anything different about our Bongo? 🔥⁣⁣

We picked him up from bongospares_ on Friday after a full service and fixing a few little things. Then Saturday we packed him up for his first proper camping adventure!⁣⁣
⁣⁣
We're currently camping at Hayfields campandcaravan (AD - hosted) in the foothills of Kinder #peakdistrict. There are no facilities open, so we had to bring our own loo (comprising of a pop up tent, collapsible loo seat, bin bag and saw dust!), but on a clear day like today it's a truly stunning spot 👌⁣⁣
⁣⁣
And it's so well located for a hike up Kinder, which is exactly what we did today. EIGHT HOURS OF HIKING!! ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I am absolutely buggered, but the boys did me super proud and somehow still had the energy to run around in circles once we returned to camp 😳😅. But thankfully we had a bolognese in the slow cooker and cold beers in the fridge waiting for us 🙌.

Just look at the colour of this sea! We had an amazing few days on Iona, swimming in the sea every day!

We stayed at the lovely ionapods which are heated and very conveniently located at the North of the island to get to the beaches, 5 minutes walk from the abbey and right below Dun I, the highest point on Iona.

I didn’t realise how beautiful Iona was until we arrived. But it definitely captured our hearts and we’ll be back one day! 💕

Let’s just forget about the ferry cancellation on the way back and a rather annoying long detour to get home! We made it and I’m pleased that I feel much more capable of taking the kids away on my own. I think that was the first time I’ve driven onto the ferry myself (aside the tiny one to Gigha!).

NUMBER 1 is Malawi 🇲🇼 (the boys were 2 and 4 years old)

Yes, Malawi! (Not the UK as a lot of your had guessed 😜).

This really surprised me. Not that it should surprise me - Malawi packs a lot into its relatively small landmass; majestic mountains, white-crescent beaches fringing the lake, and intimate big five safari experiences. Plus, the people are so genuinely lovely - there’s a reason it’s called ‘the warm heart of Africa’.

We absolutely LOVED our time in Malawi as part of our 101 days overlanding Africa.

However, in the interests of full disclosure, I have to let you know that Ez played a Malawian child in this year's nativity play, and the boys were learning about Malawian Christmas traditions in school last term 🖤♥️💚. I asked them if this affected their decision at all, and it was a firm no 😉.

Whether this did influence their decision or not, it’s made me realise that it’s important to keep learning and talking about the places we’ve travelled. It’s this that keeps the memories alive and deepens their affinity with a destination, at a time when world has shut down.

Anyways, I hope you’ve enjoyed hearing the boys' top 10 countries! It was a fun lockdown exercise and I’ve actually learnt a lot from it xx

✨Once upon a time... a girl had a dream. ✨⁣

A dream to do a multi day trek with her 9 year old son. And off they went to the Andes of Ecuador... 🏔⁣
⁣
I don’t often think of myself as strong or brave, but for a total scaredy cat I have been on some epic adventures! ⁣
⁣
👣 One of the most amazing things I’ve done was earlier this year when Cian and I and my friend hiknmeg and her two girls set off on an amazing South American adventure. ⁣
⁣
We had no guide nor accurate map. All we had was our intuition, a few measly wooden sign boards occasionally set up against a rock to tell us where to go and our own determination. ⁣
⁣
We got lost daily, sometimes many times a day. We got caught in rain showers. Some of us (me! 👋 ) got stuck in muddy ravines and had to be helped up by locals.⁣
⁣
There were tears. There were fears. There was friendship and forgiveness. There was lots of noise, and quite times too.⁣
⁣
Sometimes I just wanted to cry, so I had to dig deep to find the strength to get up that last half mile, straight up hill. Always, straight up hill. I could hardly do it. But I did. Every single day. We all did.⁣
⁣
There were hard moments, but that last day knowing the end was near I felt sadness that it was almost over. I also felt stronger though, knowing what we had accomplished. ⁣
⁣
Two moms, on our own, with kids. ⁣
⁣
🙏 Now, 10 months later I continue to feel thankful I took the opportunity to be brave and do something off the beaten path and totally unknown. ⁣
⁣
💫 I’m grateful a person I had only met a few times trusted me with a trip of a lifetime. ⁣
⁣
💪 And I’m glad to know I CAN do hard things. ⁣
⁣
🌍 Now we wait.. & plan for our next multi-day trek somewhere else in the world!⁣

All bongos need a hammock. 🙌

We bought this hammock from a decathlonindia when we lived in Bangalore a few years ago. It's been all over India, then on our travels through Africa, and now it is packed away in our #mazdabongo for whenever there's a handy tree near our pitch.

I've had a few people ask how we attach the hammock to our camper. Bongos tend to have three strong hooks under the AFT on the sliding door side. I've read somewhere that there hooks are for a specific bongo awning 🤷‍♀️, but for us they work perfectly for the hammock 👌.

And the two weeks of quarantine has begun... wish us luck 😜⁣⁣

We arrived back into the UK yesterday and stayed at my parents' place in Kent to break up the journey north. The overnight stopover is allowed by the government and my parents are away in their camper at the mo.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
We filled in the online government COVID forms before arriving to Calais, and were asked at UK border security if we had done them, although they weren't actually checked. ⁣⁣

Then as soon as Jay has finished work, we'll do the final leg back home to the Peak District today 💚. ⁣⁣

If you're dreaming of visiting an ancient Egyptian temple without a tour bus in sight, allow us to introduce you to the Memorial Temple of Seti I.
✨
Seti I reigned for about 15 years and commissioned some incredible works. His tomb is the finest in the Valley of the Kings and his temple included a number of features never before seen in a mortuary temple.
✨
In the 19th century Seti I's temple was on every Luxor itinerary, but it fell out of fashion and in the 21st century you're likely to have it to yourself.
✨
Entry to the Memorial Temple of Seti I is 60 Egyptian pounds for adults, 30 for kids 6 and up and free for kids 5 and under. Tickets can be purchased from the Antiquities Ticket Office.

✨ Wild Horses ✨⁣

When we began our homeschool journey a friend said they were going to study wild horses. Of course, upon hearing that, Cian said he wanted to as well. So, when we had the opportunity to visit Carson Valley, we knew we had to seek out the wild horses that live in the area. ⁣
⁣
What a dream day. We headed out with a local photographer who has spent his life in these hills, photographing wild animals. ⁣
⁣
We learned so much about the horses, the issues they face from the environment, people and the government. It’s such a tricky situation out here. There are lots of different bands of wild horses that roam the Carson Valley and even into the towns. The ones living close to town have been tainted by people feeding them so they are much friendlier (aka less wild!) than these. We couldn’t get even 100 ft away before they would start moving. ⁣

I had visions of close up photos with the horses, but you won’t get that here in Carson Valley. These are still as wild as wild can be! ⁣
⁣
They are a beautiful site to behold though. I encourage you to visit them some day.. just please do not feed them or try to get too close. Maybe we can eventually help these guys move deeper into the mountains away from all of us!⁣

So this is 'winter' in Spain ☀️ It's perfect hiking weather 👌🥾

Huge thanks to greengirlgetaways for telling me about the superb coastal footpath from Vilanova to Sitges. We were planning to go to Sitges today, but had no idea about the walking route until I saw her message this morning!

It's 8km along fantastic rocky cliffs and sandy coves with a regular train whizzing past on the other side.

And once we arrived in Sitges - WOWSERS! What a stunner of a town.

A train and bus then brought us back to our campsite, where the boys STILL had energy for the jumping pillow 😳. Arthur's fitbit (Xmas pressie) has totalled 29,296 steps today 🤪.
