Ryan is away on a golf trip in Michigan, and I'm just missing him 🩵

Do you and your spouse travel separately? Ryan has to fly back and forth to work while our home base is in Indiana a few months a year, but other than that, this is usually our only separate trip. While it's only for 3 days, I glad he gets to do it!

Oh, Lapland, what a beautiful and magical place you are! ⁠
⁠
We just came back from yet another place I never thought I'd ever visit: Finland.⁠
⁠
And it was magical. Like, an actual ❄️ winter❄️ wonderland. ⁠
⁠
Apparently, there are a lot of tour groups that put packages together for a trip like this, but we did it all DIY.⁠
⁠
We flew out (via Ryanair from Brussels to Rovaniemi, Finland) on a Friday morning and came back on Monday afternoon, so it was a short and sweet vacay, but we did all the things in that short amount of time, and even found time to rest and relax a bit, too.⁠
⁠
On this trip we: ⁠
❄️ crossed over and under the Arctic Circle ⁠
🎅🏻 MET (THE) SANTA! ⁠
🎄 and went to Elf school at santaparkfin ⁠
🐟 ate the best salmon of my life ⁠
🍽 also ate reindeer 🦌 and bear 🐻...oh my!)⁠
🛷 went on a reindeer sleigh ride ⁠
😍 saw the northern lights ⁠
🥾 walked/played on a frozen lake⁠
😇 made snow angels⁠
🧖‍♀️ relaxed in a sauna ⁠
🔥 made and ate s’mores ⁠
⁠
The cherry on top was that my mom came along for the trip. She's been out here visiting and jumped at the chance to go when I found tickets months ago. ⁠
⁠
We didn't stay in the city or at the ever-popular Santa Claus Village; instead, we stayed about 45 minutes north in a fantastic (but remote) AirBnB nestled next to a lake—complete with a rotating 365º hut, a sunroom, a sauna, and reindeer 🦌 for neighbors! ⁠
⁠

Recharge with a weekend staypineapple . Being parents of two little ones keeps us busy most weekends. It’s was great to spend a weekend exploring and relaxing at the Maxwell Hotel. The luxurious bedding was our favorite, even our dreams slept like babies. We didn’t need to get in our car the entire weekend, and a daily $10 credit for refreshments was unexpected, but fully utilized for late night munchie runs. I forgot to mention it’s dog friendly! On our next visit we will definitely bring our fur baby along.

I asked on my stories what you thought our next family trip would be in June. Most of you thought it would be interrailing again (I’m keen to do that too!), but actually we’re going on a cruise!

Now we’ve never been on a cruise and I don’t know what we’ll actually think of it! But it sounds amazing, so we’re going to try out a 7-day cruise around the Mediterranean. It’s organised through cruisecircleuk and we’re sailing on the royalcaribbean Symphony of the Seas.

The ship will be sailing from Barcelona, to Palma de Mallorca, Marseilles, La Spezia, Rome, Naples and back to Barcelona.

I really don’t know what to expect, so if you have any advice of things we should do or not do that would be awesome!

Also, if you’re new to cruising then please do ask me any questions and I can answer these once we’re on the ship or when we return!

DAY 23: From the jungle to the tropics and another new country (number 65 & 45), hello to BELIZE 🇧🇿🌴🍹

After exploring Tikal we headed to the small island of Flores in Guatemala for the night. It was ok - situated on a lake with lots of colourful buildings & small alleyways for streets but we were glad we made the choice to spend most of our time up in the jungle at Tikal rather than base ourselves here.

Another early wake-up to catch the 6am bus to Belize! It was around 1 hour 45 to reach the border, then it was everyone + bags off to exit Guatemala & enter Belize - right as the heavens opened 🙄🌧️ After getting soaked, waiting in line for immigration in a tin shed 🤣 we found our onward bus and headed to Belize City & the water taxi terminal. Our bags all got loaded aboard the 12pm ferry but then the ticket office were a major PITA not accepting our online purchased ferry tickets on the phone, they wanted printed hard copies (like who does that these days?!) After racing around for 10 minutes trying to find printing facilities that didn’t exist 😩 they finally agreed that we could email them our ticket 🤦‍♀️ We sprinted for the boat, made it, then settled in for the 45 minute ride out to Caye Caulker and our first ever taste of the Caribbean 🐠🦀🌴🍹🏴‍☠️

Ad PR Invite We got to join lecoupshow a ragtag troupe of travelling misfits as they challenged & competed one other with amazing circus skills, sword swallowing, fire breathing, daring aerial feats, tap dancing and acrobatics. For a whole hour they had us on the edge of our seats, chanting for more and laughing our heads off with their hilarious antics. Week 3: we moved from Khao Lak to Klong Muang. We are gonna stay in this apartment for the rest of our time in Thailand. We are spending the day’s relaxing, swimming in the pool, and hanging out on the balcony enjoying the view. Ordering take away and watching the sunset. Bob has fallen in love with pool time and starting to get brave, jumping in. It’s nice to have a bigger private space and cook a little bit. But is really don’t make much sense to do so, since it is cheaper not to. But we get our morning oatmeal 😊

Totally lucked in with the weather today!
The forecast improved this morning and after analysing the weather map for the best weather we decided to head to the coast - this time to Southwold on the Suffolk coast. The boys were happy playing with the rugby ball whilst us girls were doing a spot of beachcombing.
Wall to wall sunshine on the beach til dinner time! Soon after I took these photos we took off our coats. Our coats!!!! Getting excited that perhaps the season is finally starting to warm up!
I’ll take that for a Friday.

You could say our attempt to spot dolphins and manatees was a failure. BUT, Safety Harbor was a beautiful find, with plenty of other bird, wildlife, and sea creature sightings. They had a wheel-friendly boardwalk right along the water’s edge - making for a perfect morning... even without a manatee sighting 😕

I published a book! During our year away travelling the world, I blogged. But I never wrote the blog from our final destination nor the closing blog because I was very self-critical. It’s taken me 5 years to realise that what we did was amazing. So, I tidied up. Wrote the last blogs. Got it down off my website, formatted it, edited it and sent it off to be published. Just 4 copies for me, my husband and one each for my sons. I love the physicality of it. The gloss. The ribbon. The colours (bookprintinguk1 did a superb job)
